****Crystal’s Review ****
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This gritty, heart wrenching novel kept me interested from beginning to end. Chronicling the rise and fall of Winter Santiaga as one of Brooklyn’s “it” girls, The Coldest Winter Ever shines a light on the dark reality of a child being forced to grow up too fast.

I felt Winter’s experience through the metafiction of Sister Souljah being a character in the novel made it seem that much more real. Throughout the novel, I was rooting for Winter (ala Tyra Banks “we were all rooting for you”) but even as she disappointed me with her decisions, I found myself sympathizing and excusing her behavior since she is a just child, though this fact can be easily forgotten due to the gravity of her situations. In the end, Winter comes to terms with her decisions and seemingly has developed into a more conscionable person.

I would definitely recommend this book.

Buy Yourself The F🌸ucking Lilies -

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fun Fact: I suffer from debilitating anxiety. When I was young (early teens), I would cry myself to sleep almost every night because I couldn’t quiet my inner turmoil of fear, apprehension and worry. The worst part about it, I never told anyone. Mental health was not a subject talked about in my household or even in my friend group. Hell, I don’t even think I heard the words “Mental Health “until I was much older. I was raised to keep it inside, be strong, pray or let it go and move on.

As I grew up, I had to find ways to cope with my anxiety. Exercise became my go to option. When I began working out, I became so focused on breaking a sweat and pushing myself, I didn’t have time to overthink or worry about small things. My mind was preoccupied. Still to this day, exercise is my saving grace.

So, when I heard about Tara Schuster’s book “Buy yourself the F*cking Lilies” I was intrigued. Tara is a TV executive who shares her story on dealing with depression, anxiety and shame. In this book, Tara shares her story on re-parenting herself in the most humorous way possible (I actually LOL a few times). With chapters like: Writing it down saved my life or Hype men, Road warriors and those you must avoid, I believe everyone can find a tool to help you conquer your fears and start living your best life.

***CRYSTAL’S BOOK REVIEW****

The Color Purple by Alice Walker
⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was recently recommended to me as an absolute must read for everyone. After reading it, I completely agree!

Alice Walker writes with true authenticity for both Nettie and Celie. In each of their letters, not only their writing style can easily identify the writer of the letter but also their tone reflects the speaker. For example, Nettie's letters are often very polished using more elevated diction but she also speaks optimistically reflecting her own hopefulness.

Celie's struggles are overwhelming at times but her brilliance shines through whenever she speaks about Shug or even more so when she speaks about Nettie. Celie is one of the most resilient characters I have encountered in any novel. She may be continuously physically and emotionally beaten by the men in her life but she does not allow this to break her. Celie's story is unexpectedly inspirational.

This was a very mentally draining read at times due to the unnerving nature of Celie's reality but the ending is very rewarding.

“My father did not become the bad guy for me. Not yet. That day I hated my mother for killing my father, but also for all the reasons you cannot say. Part of my child brain hated her because she wasn’t young enough or even beautiful enough. Because she wasn’t strong enough. Or because she was too strong. Because she was so complex where my father was not. I hated my mother, in short, for being a woman.”
