UPDATE: Approximately 200 Kenyan police officers will be deployed to Haiti next week as part of the UN Security Council-backed security mission to Port-au-Prince.

This comes after Kenya, in July 2023, volunteered to lead the mission and deploy 1,000 troops to restore order to the troubled Caribbean nation overrun by marauding criminal gangs.

The officers, drawn from the elite Recce squad, Rapid Deployment Force and Special Operation Group, will touch down in Port-au-Prince around May 23 or 24, to align with President William Ruto's official visit to the United States.

The US government has pledged $100 million (Ksh.13 billion) to support the mission to Haiti, further urging other nations to make similar contributions.

Taking on his page, Kuria says the Colonial Civil Servants that his father President Museveni talked about in IDA 21 are Kenyans greatest enemies.

UPDATE: Government Spokesman, Dr. Isaac Mwaura provides updates on the ongoing flood crisis in the country.

- Death toll rises: The flooding has tragically claimed 103 lives, with the Rift Valley region recording the highest number of fatalities.

- School reopening postponed: To ensure the safety of students and staff, the government has postponed the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week to May 6, 2024.

- Search and rescue efforts underway: Search and rescue operations are ongoing in several counties severely impacted by the floods, including Nairobi, Makueni, West Pokot, and Machakos.

- Needs assessment in progress: The government is conducting a needs assessment in these areas to determine the most effective course of action and provide targeted assistance.

- Mombasa on alert: While Mombasa County has so far been spared the worst effects of the flooding, its disaster preparedness committees have been activated as a precautionary measure.

Asks inhabitants to prioritise safety by avoiding flooded areas and practicing caution around fast-moving waters.

UPDATE: Interior CS Kithure Kindiki warns & says those crossing flooded rivers will be arrested and charged with attempted sui-c!de.

To mitigate further loss of life, County Security and Intelligence Committees (CSICs) across the Country are directed to immediately:

-Inspect all public and private dams and water reservoirs in their jurisdictions within 24 Hours effective at 1400 Hours today and recommend cases where compulsory evacuation and temporary resettlement orders are to issue.

-Arrest and prosecute offenders for attempted s-uic-ide and/or attempted mu-rd-er as the facts of the case may be.

-Deploy enforcement teams at urban and rural road spots prone to storm water flooding and without bridges.

-Prevent the transportation of passengers across flooded rivers or storm water by unsafe canoes or boats and arrest inexperienced and unscrupulous persons taking advantage of the prevailing situation to cash in on persons in distress.

-The Government is coordinating all its relevant agencies and partners to prevent further loss of lives and property, and to support all those who have been affected by the ongoing torrential rains.

UPDATE: Heavy rains in the catchment areas of Kinale and Kijabe have led water courses to experience an upsurge which has led to the washing away of debris and several houses.

KeNHA informs the public that the following road sections are now impassable:

Approximately 700m from Mai Mahiu towards Naivasha.

2. Approximately 1km from Mai Mahiu towards Suswa/Narok.

These areas are heavily affected, with road blockages reported. Currently, traffic is at a standstill around Mai Mahiu centre.

The Authority is mobilizing efforts to clear the road and assess damages.

Motorists are advised to expect high traffic congestion around Mai Mahiu.

Road users are expected to plan their routes accordingly and exercise caution when traveling through the affected areas.

UPDATE: President William Ruto will have to wait for the minutes of the Defence Council on their deliberations on who will be named the next Chief of Defence Forces to make a choice on the successor of Gen Francis Ogolla.

The choices are limited. They have to look into tribal balance and the norm in the military. Gen Ogolla's tenure with the Kenya Air Force remains incomplete, posing challenges.

Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Charles Muriu Kahariri is now acting as the CDF ahead of a planned council meeting to discuss the issue of succession and decide the way forward.

The absence of a suitable Lt General within the Air Force hierarchy shifts attention to the Navy, where two potential successors, Lt Gen Mutai and Lt Gen Kahariri, await consideration.

Traditionally, CDF appointees must have served as service commanders, a criterion Lt Gen Mutai meets but Lt Gen Muriu does not.

Past appointments, such as Gen Ogolla's, highlight the importance of service commander experience. Despite traditions, exceptions may arise, allowing other Lt Generals from the Kenya Army, like Lt Gen Kimaiyo, to be considered.

Insiders say the council and the President have either Lt Gen Mutai or Lt Gen Tarus given their backgrounds and adherence to past precedents.

Former Chief of General Staff Gen Daudi Tonje who made some of the rules guiding succession in the military told journalists at his Kitale home the President as the Commander-in-Chief will make a decision based on the recommendations of the council.

Tonje says There is no vacuum in the service for now and the President will decide the next CDF when he is advised.
