“Silence doesn’t mean anything,” said one person.

23-year-old Kelvin Kiptum stunned many after beating Eliud Kipchoge’s world record at the Chicago Marathon by 34 seconds in his third attempt at the long-distance race.

Kipchoge remained silent after Kiptum’s win, and the move elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans.

05/10/2023

OCTOBER 5, 2023.
AZIMIO DEMANDS ACTION ON SONDU VIOLENCE; OPPOSE KENYA HAITI MISSION:
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party is perturbed by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country and the mayhem currently underway in Sondu.
While the latest eruption of insecurity is s the border of Kisumu and Kericho counties where scores of people have been killed and many injured in Sondu, huge sections of the country are actually under siege.

Al Shabaab is having a good time killing our people, including soldiers in Lamu and far flung places like Wajir and Mandera. Insecurity also continues to rage in sections of the North Rift, causing significant pain and loss of life.
Let’s make no mistake. The violence and mayhem in Sondu is not an ordinary disagreements between villagers. Big names are behind this violence. They include leaders and politicians from the neighbouring county and in the national government.

We view these latest incidents in Sondu as part of a long, off and on history of violence instigated by politicians who have on numerous occasions incited the different communities against each local leaders who have been implicated in these activities.
The apparent bias, indifference and helplessness of security officers in the area as violence has raged clearly indicate that big names are behind the fighting and the mayhem.

In particular, we demand that investigations be carried out against individuals who have been implicated as sponsors of this violence who include the governor of Kericho County Dr. Eric Mutai.

These leaders must abandon their expansionist tendency through which they are seeking to extend the boundary of Kericho County with a view to claiming Sondu town.
We are convinced that this violence is being sponsored by local politician who have set their claiming part of Kisumu County during the envisaged boundary review.

We strongly condemn the senseless murders and violence prevailing in Sondu.
We are also concerned over the mistrust that this violence is breeding between residents that is now taking a political dimension.
We wish to assure the innocent residents of Sondu, from either side of the border that we are in solidarity with them. We urge the residents to put down their arms and embrace each other as the brothers and sisters they have been all along.

We also appeal to the residents to resist and reject those inciting them to acts of violence and lawless that brings no value to the actors and the victims.

We are calling on the government to immediately bring the violence to an end and to provide round the clock security to the residents.

The people behind this violence and mayhem must be identified, arrested and made to account for their actions.
We are concerned over the negative impact of this violence on livelihoods and economic activities in the area. Consequently, we are asking the government to provide support the families that have been affected by this violence.

Such support should include footing the medical bills for those who have sought treatment and helping with the burials of those who have been killed in this violence.
Beyond Sondu, we are concerned over the increase in terrorist activities in parts of the Coast and northern Kenya. Just about two weeks ago, several Kenya Defense Forces soldiers aboard a Kenya Air Force chopper died in a crash within the terror prone Boni Forest in Lamu County. We believe this was an attack by Al-Shabaab.

Attacks by Al-Shabaab militants have become common place in Mandera and others parts of northern Kenya with victims being police officers, teachers and ordinary residents going about their daily routines.

We must never forget that the government has so far failed to address the various incidents of insecurity in the North Rift Counties of Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and Laikipia. In these places, armed groups, bandits, and cattle rustlers continue to conduct raids on neighboring communities, destroy property and cause massive displacement of people.
These attacks are unacceptable and must come to an end. They paint a picture of a nation that is losing the battle to gangs and terrorists.

We therefore find it strange that while the country is clearly grappling with internal security problems, the Ruto administration is taking 1000 police officers to Haiti to fight a wrong war at the wrong territory and the wrong time.

We cannot send 1000 of our young men and women in uniform in harm’s way over 12,000 kilometers away without the People of Kenya through their elected representatives in Parliament having a say as to whether this is in our strategic National Security interest or it's motivated by other interests.
In this regard we call upon our Parliamentarians to immediately summon the CS Interior, now that his Defense Counterpart passed the buck to him in the Senate yesterday, to explain to Parliament and the Nation the following concerns:

1. Why we are sending our officers to Haiti to protect Haitians while the security situation at home is deteriorating and they are unable to protect lives and property of Kenyans in Sondu, North Rift, North Eastern and Lamu where cattle rustlers, bandits and a resurgent Al Shabaab are slaughtering Kenyans day and night.

2. Why deploy our Police while the issue of Kenyan Police brutality particularly in the recent anti-tax protests which witnessed use of excessive force, killings and gross violation of human rights where 72 Kenyans lost their lives through Police bullets and thousands were wounded, is still live before the Parliamentary National dialogue committee, our courts, and the Police reforms task force?

3. Won't this be tantamount to exporting the same Police brutality and abuse of human rights to our black Haitian brothers and sisters who are also protesting the illegitimacy of their President just as Kenyans were?

4. Kenya has impeccable liberation and Pan Africanist credentials and ties with the liberation movements in the Caribbean and all over the World. Wouldn't sending our officers to Haiti not at the request of our Haitian brothers and sisters make us look like an invading force and greatly taint our Pan Africanist ties to the Caribbean whose heroes' names like Dubois, Makonnen, George Padmore and others mark our roads and our long history with our black brothers and sisters on the other side of the Atlantic?

5. Are our Police, most of whom speak neither French nor Creole and will find themselves in strange terrain, sufficiently prepared for this high risk mission or Ruto is ready to sacrifice innocent Kenya blood for American dollars and international recognition.
Ruto must stabilize and secure Kenya before thinking of sending our security people to what is clearly a Mission Impossible in a country we even had no diplomatic ties until about two weeks ago.

We call on Parliament to demand oversight on this matter with a view to protecting the young men and women about to be taken to Haiti for a war that is not ours and at a time we need more police officers in our towns and villages.
As a country, we are actually under policed. The recommended UN police to citizens’ ratio is 1 police officer for every 400 people. In Kenya, the police to people ratio stands at one officer for over 1000 people. We are under policed. We have no officers to export. In fact, we need help ourselves.
