NEXT COUP IN AFRICA
In Sub-Saharan Africa, the early 1990s brought renewed hope for a third wave of democratic governance, coinciding with the end of the Cold War and the advent of multi-party democracy. This wave was seen as a potential end to the era of African strongmen and the dismantling of the neo-patrimonial state, where a select few elites dominated the political landscape.

However, recent events in Gabon, particularly the Bongo family dynasty's continued hold on power, have dashed those hopes. In some cases, self-made rulers have managed to remain in power by clinging to power through unconstitutional means, effectively undermining the democratic transition that was expected during the Third Wave of democracy in the early 1990s.

Instead of a shift towards true democracy, some Sub-Saharan African countries have transitioned into semi-authoritarian states where not much has changed from the single-party era to the current multi-party context. Gabon, in particular, has become emblematic of autocratic rule, with one family monopolizing state resources and using all state institutions to maintain and perpetuate its rule.

Despite the passage of time from the early 1990s to the present day, little has changed in Gabon, except for the transfer of power from father to son, with Omar Bongo handing over the reins to Ali Bongo Ondimba. The recent coup in Gabon raises questions about which country might be next.

To answer this question, we must consider the context. Most of the 13 coups that occurred between 2020 and 2023 took place in Francophone Africa. Each coup had its unique context, and understanding these dynamics is crucial in predicting where the next coup might occur.

In Gabon, internal dynamics, particularly the lack of legitimacy of the Bongo dynasty, compelled the military, as the most influential institution outside the presidency, to play a role in regime change. Over nearly six decades, the military had become involved in rent-seeking from the Gabonese state as part of the agreement to keep the Bongos in power.

Anticipating civil unrest following a heavily rigged 2023 election, the military acted preemptively to prevent civilian overthrow of the regime. This allowed them to have control over any transition to democratic rule.

Additionally, Gabon's reliance on oil revenue contributed to its economic challenges. The Bongo family managed to pocket a significant portion of the oil contract revenue, exacerbating the economic woes of the country. With volatile oil prices, reduced global production, and supply chain disruptions due to the COVID-19 crisis, Gabon faced financial difficulties. Moreover, Gabon could no longer rely on France's Rapid Deployment Force for military support, as the Macron Administration did not offer that assurance.

Furthermore, the wave of coups in the Sahel region and many Francophone nations had a spillover effect in Gabon. Observing the fall of regimes led by strongmen, the public's patience with Ali Bongo's regime was wearing thin.

In conclusion, the question remains: where will the next coup occur after Gabon? Considering the post-2020 trend in Sub-Saharan Africa, it is likely that the next coup will emerge in a Francophone country in Central Africa. Most vulnerable are long-standing oligarchs like Paul Biya in Cameroon, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue in Equatorial Guinea, and Denis Sassou Nguesso in Congo Brazzaville, all of whom share borders with Gabon, produce significant oil volumes, and have been in power for extended periods. The Central African region appears to be at the center of the next potential military intervention.

Team Kenya has announced an 8-member squad for the ITTF-Africa continental event, which will take place at the Moi International Sports Center indoor gymnasium in May. Among the squad are Brian Mutua and Lisa Wele, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student at the University of Nairobi. The women's team includes Bahati Rufina, Lydia Setey, and Mary Kinyua, who has been given a wildcard entry to participate. "Vote for the presidential candidate of your choice" Governor Kiraitu Muriungi of the DEP movement, which is part of Azimio La Umoja has caused a major political tremor in Meru County by openly denouncing Azimio.

Kiraitu who is facing stiff competition from Kawira Mwangaza and Mithika Linturi stated that he is not imposing Hon Raila Odinga on Meru residents. This is another show of might on the political prowess of Ruto in the Mt Kenya East and whole Mt Kenya region.

Governor Jackson Mandagor refutes claims of his involvement in the Soy Chopper Incident. The Uasin Gishu governor has distanced himself from any involvement in the incident that saw Raila's chopper stoned.

He has gone further to make the case that he wouldn't have planned the stoning of his own car which Raila had used after he landed from the chopper.

"How can I scheme or plan to have my vehicle stoned," said Mandago. My stand on peace and unity is clearly known," he said.

MPs Caleb Kositany (Soy), Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), and Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker David Kiplagat summoned by DCI over their alleged role in the Raila helicopter stoning incident.

The three are believed to be the primary suspects in the fracas that was witnessed at Mzee Kibor's funeral. A group of goons allegedly hired by the three started yelling UDA slogans as the helicopter was preparing for takeoff.

The police dispersed the crowd with teargas before they hurled stones at the helicopter and Governor Mandagors entourage.

14 people arrested in connection to Raila Odinga's Chopper Incident. 14 suspects will be arraigned in court on Monday after CS Matiangi called for the arrest of rowdy youth who stoned Raila's chopper yesterday.

The Uasin Gishu Police Commisioner said that some locals leaders have been linked with planning the fracas and paying the youth.
