🇰🇪Kenya’s Red Cross Society began rescuing people from flooded homes after weeks of heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in large areas of the East African nation.

The charity said Wednesday that over 11,000 households have been displaced as the floods submerge entire neighborhoods in the capital Nairobi.

In the Athi River town of Machakos county, Red Cross volunteers used rubber boats to evacuate residents from their flooded homes over the weekend, pulling some to safety with ropes. The Kenya Red Cross said its volunteers have rescued more than 300 people trapped by the deluge, which has affected over half of the country's counties.

Scientists have linked the heavy rains to a climate phenomenon known as a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, resulting in higher-than-normal temperatures in the western Indian Ocean near East Africa, according to meteorologists.

The extreme rainfall follows months of drought in parts of Kenya that had pushed millions of people into acute hunger. Other countries in the region have also been warned about impending heavy downpours.
