Did you know Al-Shabab translates to ‘the youth’ in Arabic, clearly a fitting name for an organization that feeds off limited opportunities for young people in the region? According to BBC News, roughly a quarter of al-Shabab’s 7,000-9,000 forces are Kenyan. Many of them were attracted to al-Shabab’s high salaries for new recruits, which are reportedly more than $1,000. Meanwhile, the average monthly wage in Kenya is $76 ($912 annual) with 70% of working class youth are currently unemployed.
