It always amazes me how simple the gospel could be. (But at the same time we can never learn enough!)
How crazy would it be if you were sick and had to simply look at a serpent of brass that was on a pole?!

A few years ago, a close family member was trying to make a decision that could potentially change their life. Both sides had people very very opinionated and it could possibly be isolating.
After a while, they realized that (to them) it was a situation like the serpent of brass. Everything was there for them…they just had to act. It was as simple as looking up.

Last week studying the Come Follow Me, one of the topics was “It is important to put the Lord first in my life” (Exodus 20:1-7)

It made me think of something that a boss shared with me once. He asked about our priorities and responsibilities…and what the difference was, how you determined which category.

He said that your one priority should be the one thing “that which is above all else.” And spoiler. Your priority should be the Lord!

After that, all the other responsibilities will fall into place.

Have you ever experienced this?

HE IS RISEN ☀️
I am so so grateful for our Savior and all that He did for each one of us.

Here are 2 scriptures from this weeks Come, Follow Me lesson that I loved. Is there a scripture that stood out to you this week?

Isaiah 25:8 “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it.”

John 20:26-28 “And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”

This hymn always makes me think of my mission. I sang it with my trainer during a sacrament meeting and each day I did my best to be closer to Him.

During last weeks Come, Follow Me (Genesis 28-33), I learned that “Nearer, My God, to Thee” was inspired by Jacobs dream (Genesis 28:10-22).

My favorite verse (the second one) says,
“Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee.

With all that is going on in the world (even if you don’t fully understand), oh how we all desperately need to be closer to Him.

I started reading the Come, Follow Me lesson and there is an obvious theme of faith.

Abraham and Sarah had so much faith to have a child, even though he was 100 years old and she was 90 years old! (And from the standpoint of someone who just had a baby, I can’t even imagine that for Sarah)

Abraham exercised EXTREME faith when God asked him to sacrifice his son, Issac.
Yeah the same son that they prayed for. (Spoiler: it was a test of Abraham’s faith.)

And on the complete opposite side, Lot’s wife showed what happens when you don’t exercise faith and doubted the Lord could give her something better. (Granted you aren’t always gonna turn to salt if your faith is lacking - but when the city you are leaving is going to be destroyed because of wickedness…pile of salt)

Because of the many instances of faith, I LOVED the quote by Jeffrey R Holland. “…faith is things which are hoped for and not seen…” (Ether 12:6) but it is for the future, is a desire to grow and progress, and trusts that there are good things to come!

To be honest, I didn’t know that I would enjoy the talk “The Savior’s Abiding Compassion” by so much and is something I really needed!

❓Do you have a time that stands out to you when someone showed compassion towards you? Or when you showed someone compassion?

I was going through some pictures of my mission and came across a video of me playing a piano that was in my apartment. It was a sad piano that sounded like it was from a western movie desperately in need of a tuning and many of the keys were actually missing the white top. But it was exactly what I needed.

First a little backstory…
When I first got to the mission field, I weighed 100 pounds (stress and randomly becoming lactose intolerant caused me to lose weight) and it was my first time actually leaving home. I had realized that this lovely 18 month journey I was embarking on was the first time I had gone somewhere without some one in my family or have a phone to contact quickly.

While I was home, the way I dealt with stress was to play the piano. At the Provo MTC, it was super easy to find a piano if I needed it (plus the excitement and innocence of not knowing what was ahead was still very much there haha). Mission field? Maybe have access once a week at the church if we have time? And let me tell you, I was STRESSED.

Well, imagine my gratitude when I walk into my first apartment and there is a piano.

Elder Soares said that “the Savior acted compassionately toward all who would come unto Him - without distinction - and most especially toward those who most needed His help.” And I know for a fact that there are other people who needed His help more, but at that time…I desperately needed to know that He was there and that He knew that I could get through it!

The Savior is the PERFECT example of how to be compassionate and show compassion for those around us (and to show ourselves tbh). I will FOREVER be grateful for that sad piano and the compassion the Savior showed to me.

There are two things that I stick out to me in 1 Nephi 2.
First.

Despite just leaving the land of his inheritance, being threatened by the people, and traveling 3 days in the desert. The first thing that Lehi does when they arrive at the Red Sea is build an altar to the Lord.

He wants to thank Him!

How many times when we are experiencing something difficult does it take us to stop and thank the Lord for getting us through it? I don’t know about you, but I don’t. 😅 I pray a lot to get through it, but never have really prayed thanking Him for the trial. But I mean gotta be thankful for everything since the trials help us become a better person or stronger or whatever it may be.

Second.

Instead of complaining and not understanding the big picture *cough cough like Laman and Lemuel cough cough*, Nephi decided to do something about it!

“…having great desires to know of the mysteries of God, wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord;….” (verse 16)

GUESS WHAT you can do that too! 😱
You don’t have to take everything that the leaders of the church (or even just members of the church) say with blind faith (although yes at times that may be required but that is also a ✨trial✨ and we need to grow our faith…but that’s a whole other discussion)

But after Nephi did this, his heart was soften and he knew for himself which in the end helped him follow his father…but more importantly the Lord is there no matter what!

What do you learn from this chapter?

I don’t know about you, but I learned a lot this week studying in Moses 7. One thing that I love about the Come Follow Me lessons (and scriptures in general), is that even though we are all given the same things to study…we all have the possibility of learning something different depending on what we need.

One topic I enjoyed studying on answering the questions is about when God shows emotion. (Now I’m sure that throughout time He has shown lots of emotion, it is just never recorded.)

Moses 7:28 says “And it came to pass that the God of heaven looked upon the residue of the people, and he wept; and Enoch bore record of it, saying: How is it that the heavens weep, and shed forth their tears as the rain upon the mountains?”

Heavenly Father is looking at the earth (after the city of Enoch is translated) and sees so much wickedness and that “…they are without affection, and they hate their own blood;” (Moses 7:33).

I think that it is pretty important to know that He feels that deeply about His children. From other scriptures we know that this kind of behavior upsets Him, but just like any father He weeps when He sees His children being lead astray.

He loves us so much and wants us to return home to be with Him. He has given us all of the creations of the earth, life, agency, knowledge…and He wants us to love one another and follow Him.

He has created worlds without number, yet He is aware of and cares for us. (Moses 7:30)

❓When have you had an experience that helped you know that God is aware of and cares for you?

Elder Neil L Andersen spoke this past Conference about how the name of the church is not negotiable.

President Nelson has been saying that we need to call the church by its full name. And yeah. It’s a long name, but we were all (unintentionally) taking Christ out of it.

While I was serving my mission, we would talk to devout Christians frequently and they would try to tell us that “the Mormon church doesn’t believe in Christ.” That could’ve (and yes we mentioned it) been solved suuuuper easy if they knew that the real and correct name of the church was The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints.

By putting forth the effort to call the church by its correct name, President Nelson promises “that our rigorous attention to use the correct name of the Savior’s Church … [would bring us] increased faith and access to greater spiritual power.”

❓ Have you noticed any blessings from putting Christ’s name back into His church?

Okay doesn’t President Oaks do a great job of not beating around the bush and getting right to the point?!

I absolutely loved this talk and totally agree with what he said! WE NEED CHURCH

With the events that occurred in 2020, not being able to go to church was rough. At first I was shocked how much time I had on Sunday (that was mainly just spent with my husband and dogs), but then it got to the point where I was missing being there in person and taking the sacrament with others.

It was also during this time that I had a miscarriage. I had never felt so lonely in my life and wanted to go back to church. Not so that people could check on me and care about the baby we lost (I mean I live in Utah, miscarriage is a taboo word so who knows if that actually would’ve happened and it’s a whole other story), but just to be in His house and feel closer to Him. At that time I even was working in Salt Lake at the Conference Center! A place where I know that the spirit has been felt multiple times. But I missed going to church and worshipping with those around me.

When it was finally cleared for us to begin going to church in person, I was so excited! (Even if it was only sacrament meeting) There weren’t very many people on our ward, we had to wear masks, and social distance (plus it didn’t help that we had moved into the ward two or three months before everything happened and I was serving in the nursery so I knew the children only 😂😅) But the warm feeling I got when we sang together and taking the sacrament was amazing and something I will never forget!

❓What feelings did you have when you were able to resume your church attendance (in person/virtual)?

I remember when I was little, learning about the Fall always confused me. Like what the heck Eve! But dang was I wrong haha

Something that stands out to me about the Fall, might sound silly, but Heavenly Father really knows what is going to happen in our lives and you can see his hand in it.

He knew that, although the Garden of Eden was beautiful, Adam and Eve would need to leave.

He knew that Satan would tempt Adam and Eve.

He knew that one of them (who knows if He knew it would be Eve) would eat the fruit.

He knew that the other would realize that they would also need to eat the fruit.

He knew that there needed to be a Savior because the world outside of the Garden was far from perfect and beautiful. (Yes the world is beautiful, but wouldn’t it be more beautiful if there were less annoying bugs and thorny plants?)

He knew that we would need some assistance from the Holy Ghost along the way.

If he knows all of these things, imagine what He knows about you and the help He can provide. (It’s not like life has a pause button so he can re-evaluate what He can provide you with)

Because He loves us, the Fall needed to happen for us to make it back home to be with Him.

“Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” (2 Nephi 2:25)

❓What joy(s) do you experience as a result of the fall? (My answer will be in the comments!)

What’s better than studying General Conference with a sleeping baby on your chest 🥰 and I couldn’t decide which one I liked more, so you get both 😜

This past week, my personal social media feed has been filled with people sharing why they left the church. I read them, cause I’m curious what led them to that choice, but after it makes me feel sad for them.

I know everyone has agency and we should use it! I mean Christ died for us to be able to use it. And everyone should find their own reason why they love the gospel and why they want to continue following that path.

President Nelson’s talk “The Temple and Your Spiritual Foundation”, I learned that when we want to become stronger 💪, build a better foundation 🧱, focus on our faith 🌱…the temple needs to be an integral part of what you want to accomplish.

When we build upon CHRIST
➡️we draw upon His power
➡️don’t need to worry about today’s unique anxieties

❓What blessings have you received from visiting the temple?

• 1 Nephi 1•
In this chapter, we learn a little about Nephi and
his father, Lehi (just one of the prophets trying to teach those who lived in Jerusalem). Lehi had a vision about God and the Savior, what is to
happen to Jerusalem if they don't repent, and
more. It brought Lehi joy, so he wanted to share..
but the people mocked him.

❓What's something you learn from this chapter?

📚 Study Tip: I once had a Sunday School teacher who said something along the lines of finding Christ on each page of the Book of Mormon. As you study, look for Christ on each page!

Hi I'm Madi! 👋

While I was serving my mission (Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh, if you were wondering), I discovered that I was very much a visual learner (and that I needed a way to stay awake during study time 😅).

Each day, I would begin my studies with reading a chapter or so of the Book of Mormon! I decided to draw out what I was reading with stick men and women! It helped me figure out what was most important to learn and provided me with a new perspective.

As a new mom, I want to focus on the gospel as much as I can for my little boy. To help me do that, I want to share some of my studies with you..from the Book of Mormon, Come Follow Me, and General Conference but through doodles and a bit of calligraphy. I hope that you will enjoy my thoughts and that you will share yours with me!

Tell me about you in the comments ⬇️
