*Teachers handbook 2024*
*1. On attendance to duty:*
Let us strive to avail ourselves for duty as expected. When you are not able to make it to school, for whatever reason, kindly make it official. Don't rely on your good personal relationship with your principal. They sometimes change, without a warning.
*2. On professional documents:*
It is advisable that we have these documents in place, not because some officer from TSC is moving around, but because it is our job.
*3. On Jeremiah waters:*
Do it in moderation. Don't allow alcohol to control your daily schedule. If you can't control alcohol, then you better quit this industry, now. Better still, be man enough to admit that you require rehabilitation services. Apart from the dysfunctional families out there, it is this *excessive consumption of alcohol* that is responsible for many fatal health complications among our colleagues.
*4. On immoral behavior:*
This one will sink you, irregardless of your "perceived innocence". Keep off school girls (and boys), at whatever cost. What that girl submits before a disciplinary panel is considered gospel truth. In any case, TSC already has a formed mind about you, even before they listen to your case. Yes, you will go home for sure.
*5. On personal finances:*
Think about your retirement date(it is indicated on the payslip) immediately you take up this job. Retirement is not an accident, it is something you can visualize. *Invest in a sacco, the benefits outweigh the risks, any time.* Rushing for bank loans even without a clear plan of what you intend to do with such large amount of money is a sure way of messing up your financial situation so early in your career. You might need a lot of effort to stabilize in future.
*6. On social capital:*
It is prudent to invest in your social circles. Make friends, as many as you can. Some will be genuine, others will be fake, they are both friends. No one is going to make it in life without support from colleagues and friends. Accept to learn new things in life, even if those sharing such info are your juniors.
*7. On career goals:*
Have some ambitions in this profession. Any man without ambition is as good as dead. As ambitious as you maybe, don't compete colleagues. *Life is in phases, men are in sizes.* Move at your speed, but all the same, continue moving.
*8. On family:*
You need your family to achieve anything out there. These are the only people whose support is always unconditional. Support your family members to achieve their goals too. This could be the most motivating thing that you will need, to achieve your own goals.
*9. On side hustles:*
Everyone will find something to do out there to supplement their incomes. In all fairness, don't allow your side hustles to compromise your service delivery at your work place. As you pursue this, be wary of fraudsters waiting to make a kill from your heard earned money. Colleagues have lost money in business ventures that looked so profitable from the onset. Consult. You lose nothing by consulting around.
*10. On your health:*
This is the most important aspect of our life, it will affect everything else in our career. Check on what you eat/drink. Avoid buying drugs across the counter without medical prescription. Don't be too busy to go to hospital. What you think is an ordinary headache can turn out to be something else, with time. You are a teacher yourself, not a medical practitioner (even if you are the best teacher of Chemistry around). Go for relevant tests as early as now especially for the most common killer diseases; HIV, cancer, TB etc. Most importantly, check on the mental health of your colleagues and your loved ones. *Mental health is a real issue out here.* That colleague who is behaving strangely requires help. Reach out to them. And most importantly, find some time to thank God for this gift of life. Go to church(or mosque). *Without God, you will surely achieve nothing.*
