The maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows: Super Petrol increases by KShs.16.96, Diesel increases by KShs.21.32 per litre & Kerosene increases by KShs.33.13 per litre.^DC..

Every time the President talks about economic matters, especially on the cost of living and the debt issue, as an economist I usually find this an insult to my intelligence and it pains my left ventricle to it's core.

The President through the 2023/24 budget plans to borrow Ksh 718 billion to service the deficit. That is not the problem. The problem is that out of the Ksh 718 billion to be borrowed, Ksh 586.5 B will fall under domestic borrowing while Ksh 131.5 B will be external or foreign borrowing.

Now here is the thing that makes my heart bleed profusely for the future of this country. Domestic borrowing is one of the key factors that can collapse an economy in the blink of an eye. Why? Because domestic borrowing mainly aims at commercial banks. The ripple effect is that banks always prefer lending to the government than to individuals based on the risk valuation and interest rates. To ensure they do this, they increase interest rates to discourage individual borrowing and lend more to the government. Little or ultimately lack of borrowing by individuals kills investments and businesses, hence less money in circulation resulting to huge levels of lay offs.

Mwai Kibaki a fellow economist who Ruto attempts to compare himself with, greatly reduced internal borrowing and focused more on external borrowing. This is what drove banks to something the country had never witnessed before; lowering of interest rates and even going out to ask individuals to apply for loans (populary known as hawking of loans). This sprung up new investments as it expanded existing ones. The levels of income rose and thus a wide tax base and more revenue collection by the government.

I do not know and I fail to understand who advises Ruto because the disparity in those figures of domestic and foreign borrowing is the biggest red flag as far our economy is concerned.

What it literally means is Ruto will take out Ksh 586.5 billion from circulation in the economy. In the economic model, we have injections into the economy and withdrawals. Ruto plans to withdraw Ksh 586.5 billion from the economy of the country. The impact of such a move is unimaginable, ranging from inflation to very high and unaffordable cost of living. The worst part is that he might end up never paying that obligation.

So, as he tells people that he will not get loans externally, his moves will collapse the country’s economy.
