Acting IG Kanja bans protests in Nairobi CBD “until further notice”

Acting Inspector General Douglas Kanja has banned protests within Nairobi CBD and its surroundings.
The Acting Inspector of General of Police Douglas Kanja has banned protests within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) and its surroundings until further notice.

In a statement, IG Kanja said that the National Police Service (NPS) had taken the drastic decision after getting credible intelligence that organized criminal groups are planning to take advantage of the ongoing anti-government protests to execute criminal activities.

“We therefore appeal to all members of the public to remain vigilant in crowded areas, and to support our collective safety and security by sharing any information that may aid the Police in crime detection and prevention,” Kanja said. “As a Service, we wish to reiterate our commitment to partner with members of public and media to keep our country safe and secure for all of us. May God bless you Fellow Kenyans, and May God bless our Country.”

The police boss rued that since the protests advocating for a changes in government and organised by Kenyan youths (Gen Z) began in June this year, the country had experienced enormous losses, people have been injured, lives lost, property and businesses destroyed, and livelihoods lost.

While the Constitution under Article 37 provides for the right, peaceably and unarmed, to assemble, to picket, to demonstrate and to present petitions to public authorities, Kanja says that the same constitution provides for the critical role that the NPS plays in the national security of the country.

“Acting on this information and in accordance with international security standards for public assemblies, which require a designated leader to coordinate, collaborate and cooperate with police for peaceful demonstrations, the lack of designated leadership in previous demonstrations has made it difficult to enforce safety protocols,” Kanja adds.

Prominent Kenyan Journalist Abducted from Police Station by Apparent Security.

On the morning of Wednesday, July 17th, veteran Kenyan journalist Macharia Gaitho was reportedly abducted from the Karen Police Station in Nairobi.

A video taken by Gaitho's son Andrew shows the journalist being forcibly bundled into a private car by individuals believed to be uniformed police officers, as well as others dressed in civilian clothing.

According to Andrew, his father had driven to the police station seeking refuge after noticing a suspicious vehicle following him through traffic.

However, once inside the police station, Gaitho was confronted by the group and forcibly removed, with other police officers at the station apparently watching on without intervening.

Gaitho is a well-known columnist for the Kenyan newspaper The Nation, making this incident all the more concerning.

The motives and identities of those responsible for the abduction remain unclear at this time.

Kenyan authorities have yet to comment publicly on the situation, leaving many questions unanswered about the journalist's current whereabouts and condition.

This developing story highlights the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in Kenya, where press freedoms have come under increasing pressure in recent years.

The abduction of a prominent media figure from within a police station suggests a troubling disregard for the safety and security of those reporting on issues of public interest.

President William Ruto has asked financial institutions to come up with a credit model that will allow small businesses to access affordable loans.

He said it is possible for Mama Mboga and Boda Boda to enjoy low interest loans the same way big firms do.

The President explained that the Government will underwrite the risks that will come with the new move.

He spoke today at Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi during a media briefing by Safaricom, NCBA Bank and Kenya Commercial Bank.

“We must think beyond financial inclusion to a more accessible and affordable credit model. That way, small businesses will grow and drive our economy,” he said.

He noted that the Government is not against Credit Reference Bureau listing but its abuse and criminalisation.

“We are for a mechanism that instils financial discipline. The current CRB as it is is inhibitive; an in-out, all or nothing outfit,” added Dr Ruto.
