Ubuntu!! To board ama tusaree. Nakuru people....

The principle of Ubuntu advocates for excercise of humanity in our everyday tasks. It acknowledges that success in human society is a collective endeavour.

While individual effort and reward is much encouraged, it should not be at the cost of the society. We make wealth out of creating opportunity and enhancing value.

A man who borrows to build a tea factory in his village, employs his mates and creates wealth for his micro economy. He is a symbol of “I am because We are”. A classic Ubuntu moment.

On the other hand, a man who grabs a public utility for personal gain, is engaged in destructive and primitive accumulation of wealth. You cannot destroy the society you live in, to propel individual gain.

This is the software that has disappeared from our politics. The society we live in has been relegated to fourth place. Me, myself, I then society.

It is time to reflect and change. Long live the spirit of Ubuntu.

Decree to beat illicit brew.

When I visited Njoro to condole with the families that lost their loved ones after consuming poisonous alcohol, I was very shocked.

The brewers of illicit brew rule the village. At the barazas, no one dares to mention them by name for fear of reprisal. In the past, few who dared, met their creator in unclear circumstances and no one has been keen to unravel the cause.

Young men have been rendered zombies by harmful chemicals consumed as alcohol. Methanol, a common preservative is mixed with water and served to eager consumers unaware of the damage to their body. While we mourn the mass deaths, every week one or two people die and this goes unannounced.

At the selling dens, occasionally an old police land cruiser will stop by and after some pleasantries with the brewers, its business as usual. For this reason, the public is not willing to report the menace when they know the economic connection between the brewers and enforcers.

The unholy alliance between law enforcers and brewers has made the community helpless.

I met a family who narrated how the police frustrated the postmortem of the victims of the poisonous alcohol to protect brewers. No prosecution can happen without a formal report.

The community has been terrorised to the point of acceptance.

With all this, we have decided, ciaigana ni ciaigana, enough is enough. The beneficiaries of illicit alcohol trade will find no peace in our midst.

If this is what it will take to save the next generation and save the family unit, we are guilty.
