Rwanda epic TEAM KENYA-CYCLING
The Great Rift Valley Challenge 2023 was held on Sunday, the 2nd of April, and it was a remarkable event that saw some of the best cyclists in Kenya and Uganda compete in one of the toughest road races in the region. The GRVC road race covered a distance of 120kms, and it was divided into two categories - Elite and Lite - for both men and women under 23 and seniors.
The Elite category started at Biretwo and climbed up to Kabarnet, turned back to Biretwo, and then proceeded to Iten, climbing to 7900 ft. The total elevation gain for the Great Rift Valley Challenge(GRVC) elite race was more than 3000 feet of climbing, making it the most challenging road race on the Kenyan cycling calendar.
The race started at 7:30 AM with the elite category, while the GRVC Lite started at 8:30 AM, both at Stabex petrol station in Biretwo. The early break of the race was initiated by Evan Wangai of Kenyan Riders, but it was quickly reeled in. Charles Kagimu of Uganda, riding for the Kenya Rider cycling team, won the race, covering 120kms in 4 hours 8mins and 58 mins. He was followed by John Kariuki of Kenya rider /Team Amani, and Paul Lumuria was the second runners-up.
For many riders, it was a long day in the saddle, but luckily the weather was cool, especially in the Kieyo Valley, where the temperatures can be very high. Uganda was well represented by the Masaka cycling club and the Uganda national team, and they certainly gave the Kenya team a run for their money.
In the Women's Elite category, Berber Kramer won the race with a record-breaking performance of 5 hours 10 minutes and 55 seconds, a 20-minute improvement from her record last year. Aleper Mary was the second runners-up, followed by Nakagawa Florence, Bernice Kariuki, and Faith Wambulwa.
Overall, the Great Rift Valley Challenge 2023 was a thrilling event that showcased the talents and determination of some of the best cyclists in the region. Congratulations to all the winners and participants who pushed themselves to t
