Education Activist Condemns Bribes for Grade 10 Admission

Education activist Nyanusi Monga has criticized some C1 level school head teachers for allegedly demanding bribes from parents in exchange for Grade 10 admission letters, calling the practice corrupt and unjust.

Monga said many academically qualified learners are missing out on Grade 10 places because their families cannot afford illegal payments. He blamed the problem on limited school capacity and a shortage of teachers, which he said fuels corruption.

He urged the government and the Ministry of Education to investigate the allegations, discipline those involved, and recruit more teachers to expand Grade 10 spaces. Monga emphasized that education is a basic right and should be based on merit, not money.

Parents and learners are now calling on authorities to act swiftly to ensure transparent and fair Grade 10 admissions across the country.

Education Is Not for Sale: Nyanusi Monga Calls for an End to Bribes for Grade 10 Spaces

Education activist Nyanusi Monga has strongly condemned the practice of some head teachers at C1 level schools who allegedly demand money from parents in exchange for Grade 10 admission letters. He described the practice as corrupt, unfair, and damaging to the future of deserving learners.

Speaking during a community engagement, Monga said many learners who qualify academically are being denied Grade 10 places simply because their parents cannot afford to pay illegal fees.

“Education must be based on merit, not money,” said Monga. “It is painful to see hardworking learners lose opportunities while others buy their way into school.”

Monga noted that the problem is worsened by a shortage of teachers and limited school capacity, which creates competition for Grade 10 spaces and opens doors to corruption. He urged the government to take immediate action by investigating head teachers involved in the malpractice and enforcing strict disciplinary measures.

He further called on the Ministry of Education to recruit and deploy more teachers to C1 level schools in order to increase the number of available Grade 10 spaces and improve the quality of education.

“If the government adds more teachers, schools will have no excuse to sell Grade 10 places,” Monga said. “This will restore fairness and protect the integrity of our education system.”

Monga emphasized that education is a basic right and should never be treated as a business. He appealed to parents, teachers, and authorities to work together to end corruption in schools and ensure equal access to education for all learners.

As pressure continues to mount, many parents and learners are hopeful that the government will respond positively to these calls and take decisive steps to ensure that Grade 10 admissions are transparent, fair, and corruption-free.

Residents Burn Houses After Family Burial Dispute in Rigoma Ward

Residents of Bogetario Embaro village in Rigoma Ward, Bogetutu, North Masaba, were left in shock after several houses were set on fire following a bitter family dispute over a burial arrangement.

According to local reports, tension arose between two related families who disagreed on where a deceased family member should be buried. The disagreement quickly escalated, drawing in villagers and relatives from both sides. What began as a family matter soon turned violent as anger and emotions ran high.

During the chaos, unknown individuals allegedly set fire to houses belonging to one of the families involved in the dispute. Property of unknown value was destroyed, leaving some families homeless. Fortunately, no deaths were reported during the incident.

Local leaders and security officers arrived at the scene to restore calm and prevent further destruction. Police have launched investigations to identify those responsible for the arson and to address the root cause of the conflict.

Authorities have urged residents to resolve family and cultural disputes through dialogue and legal channels, warning that taking the law into one’s own hands only leads to loss and suffering for the community.

The body of the deceased has reportedly been moved to a mortuary as elders and local administrators work to find a peaceful and lawful solution regarding the burial.
