Peace! 💙💛
The Comfort Town Housing by Ukrainian architectural firm , a 40-hectare development of concrete buildings, is all about colour. Inspired from the Legos, Comfort Town erupts from its otherwise boring surroundings much like a set of miniature buildings from blocks placed on a grey carpet. Comfort Town’s 180 low-rise apartment buildings are indeed a playful response to the sprawling 1950s and 60s communist-era housing that encircles them.

Reposted from O-14 Tower (2010) | Business Bay, Dubai, UAE

The 22-storey office block, known by residents as the Swiss Cheese building, was created by RUR Architecture of New York. The design was inspired by Arabian screens known as mashrabiya - derived from the verb shrafa, meaning to overlook or to observe. These screens are characteristic of traditional architecture in the Islamic world, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. The screens are made from wood and used in projecting windows to allow residents to look out onto the street without being seen and to keep the interior of homes cool by allowing circulation of air through the carved wood.

The O-14 Tower is wrapped in a 40-centimetre outer wall of white concrete punched with 1,300 holes, which provides shade and blocks the desert's heat and glare. Additionally, the void between the inner and outer wall creates a vacuum, allowing cool air to filter through the holes of the concrete wall. This forces hot air up and away from the inner tower and as a result, has helped to reduce cooling costs by 30 percent according to estimates by the architects (Kevin Brass, The National, May 24, 2011).

Interestingly, the energy-saving benefit of the void was not intended by the building’s architects, but was done to allow room to clean the windows. However, one cannot help but detect an irony here when considering that one of the purposes of the building’s inspiration - the mashrabiya - is to cool the interior of homes. Nevertheless, this unique eye catching tower embodies a modern approach to a classic element of Middle East and North African architecture.

From a 🚘 parking to a ❤💛💙 playground

Milan is back with its Piazza Aperte project. In Quarto Oggiari, on the outskirts of the city, the car park in Via Val Lagarina in front of the high school was converted into a colourful square in May 2021. 🤾‍♂️💃

The aim of this project, called Quadra, is to promote a new use of the 600 m2 of space by citizens. The design, conceived by Serena Confalonieri, aims to create a new aggregative and community dimension for the neighbourhood. 🔄
In addition to improving children's safety 🚸 at the entrance and exit of the school, its design, based on primary colours and geometric decorations, has an educational as well as a playful character. 🤸‍♀️

The geometry is developed according to a grid:
- The central 4-metre module allows emergency vehicles to pass through.🚑
- The intermediate 2m modules are used for green spaces and play areas (checkers, tongue twisters, bells...).🌻
- The small 1m modules facilitate compliance with safety regulations.😷🦠

In addition, bicycle parking spaces have been inserted and new trees have been planted.🌱

This intervention is the result of a collaboration agreement between the city council and citizens' committees. 🤝 Moreover, citizen participation was carried out throughout the whole process, from the design based on the preferences of the citizens, to the realisation in order to instil a sense of belonging to the new space. ❤
Specifically, the colouring of the square was done by the association and the school students.🖌🌈
