Recording a clean electric guitar and then spending hours tweaking it to meet the guitarist's expectations can be a punishing task.

That's where cabs come into play. They help capture the sound coming out of the amplifier as the guitarist hears it. If it's not quite right, we can tweak it together until we get close, and then put a microphone on it.

The Shure SM57 is a classic favorite for this task.
