I strongly condemn the decision by the Kakamega County Government to ban food hawking in town, a move that unfairly targets vulnerable members of our society. While the decision to ban food vending might be made in good faith, a better way to address underlying issues should be sought. Many of the food vendors, including those living with disabilities, single mothers, and hustlers, rely on this trade for their livelihood. Particularly at Muliro Garden and other parts of the town, I have interracted with physically challenged individuals selling boiled eggs and sausages. These individuals are providing affordable meals to the public while supporting their families. If we uphold the ban, where do you want them to go?
I urge the county government to reconsider this decision and engage with these vendors in a more inclusive manner.
