Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi was betrayed by his people in the struggle for freedom. On October 21, 1956, Ndirangu Mau(pictured), nicknamed Githimii, shot Kimathi.

Ndirangu was part of home guards sent out to track Mau Mau fighters. He had been employed as a home guard in the 1940s with a salary of Sh60 a month.

Mombasa’s Mtwapa bridge was built in 1980.

Before that, a raft was used to haul vehicles across Mtwapa creek as seen in these early 1960 pics. Municipal workers who occasionally provided entertainment used chains to heave the raft and its cargo across🇰🇪🇰🇪

KISUMU CITY formerly called PORT FLORENCE. On Friday, 20 December 1901, the railway line ('Uganda Railway') reached the Kisumu pier, with the centre adopting a new name, Port Florence.Florence Preston drove the last nail in the last sleeper of the railway by the shores of L.Victoria in 1901. She was the wife to the chief railway engineer. The township was then named Port Florence,then renamed back to Kisumu in 1903.
