When she bid her husband, Nelson Nereba Njeru, goodbye at Toronto International airport, Canada, Lucy Njeri could have never imagined what allegedly awaited her at the end of her journey.
According to Njeri, nothing seemed out of place as she hugged her husband of more than 20 years as they said their last goodbyes. Her final flight would be at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi where she planned to spend at least two nights before proceeding to their home in Embu.
Njeri recalled that her husband, Nelson Njeru was against the idea of her brother picking and chauffering her around town for the two days she was planning to spend in Nairobi. He, her husband, had instead offered to pay for a taxi to pick her up at the airport and drop her at her hotel.
So when she saw someone waving a placard with her name on arrival, she never thought much of it as she already knew her husband had pre-arranged a taxi for her. What surprised her, however, was the make of the car. According to Njeri, her husband had informed her that she would be chauffered in a Prado but the one that was waiting at the pick up was a black Toyota van.
That was not the end of her worries because when she entered the taxi, another red flag was awaiting her. The driver was with another man in the vehicle but she quickly dismissed it as a colleague.
But as they drove out of the airport, another yet unusual thing happened. Her driver seemed clueless at the exit pay point but what even surprised her more was when the driver of the car behind them came to her driver's rescue. Njeri even recalls pleasantly asking if that show of generosity was now the norm in the country. Her last time in the country was in 2019 and a lot seemed to have changed.
As they left the airport towards the embassy hotel, Njeri couldn't help but notice that the car was moving at a slow speed. But right before she could even digest all these, the assumed colleague jumped to the backseat where she was seated and started strangling her.
Without batting his breath, the man told her that her husband had paid them Sh1.5 million to kill and dump her body in Karura forest. Njeri further alleged that her attackers knew that she had with her copies of her property documents. The attackers told her that they had been instructed to collect the documents and the dollars she had in her sling bag.
Njeri claimed that she pleaded with the hitmen not to kill and they in turn agreed to spare her life on condition that she would pay them Sh2 million. At this point of agreement, her attacker stopped assaulting her and proceeded to play audio of how her murder was planned.
After taking Sh1.1 million in dollars, they also took her 3 phones and the documents of their properties as they had been instructed by Mr. Nelson Njeru. The hitmen further went ahead to let her listen to recorded Whatsapp conversations where she got a blow to blow account of how they had been instructed to execute and dispose of her remains.
