SLEEP TRAINING
HOW I HAVE DONE IT WITH ALL MY KIDS.

Firstly, prepare yourself and your spouse(for those who are married) psychologically because the training requires one to be deliberate and resilient to achieve the goal.

STEPS IN SLEEP TRAINING:

Step 1- Train the Child to fall asleep on their own without being rocked/soothed to sleep. This is both during the day naps and night

Step 2- Train the child to sleep through the night without waking for night feeds(or to only feed once, this depends on the parents)

WHEN TO START SLEEP TRAINING

From 7 months or when a child has successfully weaned. This again depends on the parents but i would advise before they get to 1 year of age.

HOW TO SLEEP TRAIN.

1. Firstly, establish a routine during the day of when they feed, take a bath, nap and go to bed at night. Sleep training works well when these things are established, this means these things have to be timed to random. Have set time for feeds, nap, play, bath etcetera.

2. Secondly, when the above is set, at the specific time a child is to go to bed. Place them on the cot or wherever they sleep, cover them, leave the room and close the door( if at night switch off the lights).

3. To train the child to fall asleep on their own, it is recommended that you let them cry it out for 10-15 mins before going back to the room.

If at least 15 minutes elapse and they are still crying, go back to the room, if at night don't switch on the lights pick them soothe them for a minute or so and place them back on the cot. Repeat the process in point 3 until they fall asleep on their own.

To successfully sleep train it would take a child 3 days some longer depending on the child and most importantly, the parents' restlessness.

When successfully done with training the child on how to fall asleep on their own you can now move on to sleep training them through the night, the process is similar and remember never to put on any kind of light even that of the phone, you'll be working in futility.

Lastly, i highly recommend sleep training be done by the parent and not the house girl and it is best to do it getting into the weekend or when one is on off/leave.
