HOW TO CONSTRUCT A POULTRY HOUSE ???

Commercial chicken farming requires a high-level of expertise, understanding and commitment to be successful.

Whilst it’s important to emphasize the need for excellent flock management at all times, something that comes with experience and aptitude, adopting the correct housing techniques and equipment will set a firm foundation for success of your poultry venture.

The following is a guiding checklist for poultry house construction;

"A poultry house should provide the birds with a comfortable environment and protect them from the extremities of the prevailing weather (rain, wind and sunshine).

"It should have adequate space for the flock to be kept in the house. The ideal stocking density is:
- Layers: one square metre for 6 birds.
- Broilers: One square metre for 11 birds.

"It should be open-sided to allow natural ventilation with an east-west orientation to minimise the amount of sunlight entering the house directly. Its not good for sun rays to strike directly into the poultry house.

"It should be rectangular in shape and have a wall not higher than three feet on the longer side. The widith should be at least 7-9 metres, but for the length you are only limited by your land. Avoid building poultry houses in a square form.

"This wall can be made from stones, iron sheets, timber, silver boards or bricks

"The rest of the side of the wall should have a chicken wire mesh. The wire mesh on the sides of the house should be of a small gauge to prevent entry of wild birds, dogs and rodents. This normal chicken mesh is not long lasting.....within a few months it rusts and gets off the house. its better to use a plastic quoted mesh.

"The roof of the house should have a reflecting surface and pitched with overlaps to ensure that the house is comfortable and well ventilated. There should be enough gap between the birds and the roof to avoid heat stress. The pin of the house should be 8 metres from the ground, and the sides shoul

When you talked about kienyeji chicken you touched my heart. Here is an article I wrote about how you can make it by starting with only 10 kienyeji chicken. It's long but worth reading.

HOW YOU CAN GROW A FLOCK OF 300 HENS A YEAR FROM 10 HENS AND 1 C**K THROUGH SYNCHRONIZATION.
WARNING:A VERY LONG POST

Today I will give lessons on how you as a farmer can be successful in your chicken project and multiply your flock of chicken by starting with 10 hens and 1 cock. You can rise from nothing to something.
How do you go about it?You can start with 10 hens and 1 cock. You need to programme or synchronize these hens to hatch chicks at the same time.
* Provide each hen with its nest.Use old mtungi(jerricans) or plastic basin or cartons with grass, wood shavings or old clothes placed inside.
*Place one unfertilized egg in each basin/mtungi or even boiled egg. This is to trick them so that they can start being broody.Be sure to dust the nest with an insecticide powder to keep out parasites.
*Mark the eggs placed there with a pencil.Be sure to remove eggs that are laid but leave the marked eggs in the nest. The collected eggs should be stored in a cool, dry place not in the kitchen or cupboard.Be sure to write the date of laying on the eggs with a pencil.
*Normally one bird will start sitting on the marked egg(boiled egg/unfertilized egg) overnight.Leave it for 10 days while it's waiting for others to start incubating or sitting on eggs.
*After 10 days give all hens that would have started sitting on eggs 12 eggs each to incubate. The eggs must have been laid recently.
*Leave the hens which may not have started incubating alone. You can eat the old eggs or sell them. When choosing the eggs for incubation make sure they are not too small, too big, cracked, dirty, too pointed, round or old eggs that are more than 10 days old.
*When done this way the birds will all hatch at the same time after 21 days or 22 days latest.Farmers with incubators can also use them to hatch.

ELEVEN POWERFUL LESSONS TO LEARN FROM A HEN. 1. She first lays enough eggs before sitting on them GOOD PLANNING. 2. When she starts sitting on her eggs, she minimizes movements DISCIPLINE. 3. She physically loses weight while sitting on her eggs due to decreased feeding SACRIFICE AND SELF-DENIAL 4. She can sit on eggs for another hen INDISCRIMINATION AND GENEROSITY. 5. She sits on her eggs for twenty one (21) days, patiently waiting, even if they do not hatch, she will lay eggs again FAITH, HOPE AND NOT DISCOURAGED. 6. She detects unfertilized eggs and rolls them out SENSITIVE AND DISCERNING. 7. She abandons the rotten eggs and starts caring for the hatched chicks even if it is only one WISDOM, CONSCIOUSNESS, AND REALISTIC 8. No one touches her chicks PROTECTIVE AND LOVE. 9. She g*thers all her chicks together UNITY OF PURPOSE. 10. She cannot abandon her chicks before they mature MENTORSHIP. 11. She is always at the front of her chicks. LEADERSHIP

Did you know that poultry meat has collagen?

08/03/2022

There is an insatiable demand for consumer goods most especially agricultural produce, there is a big market within ourselves but the problem is the supply vs demand. The challenges we are facing as average farmers is enough capital and machinery to carry on.Once we focus on how to get things done, appreciate some foods like sorghum, millet and cassava etc we will concur hunger.
