Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamket has petitioned the National Government over the gazettement of Kapedo and Mukutani as the headquarters for Suguta and Ilchamus Sub Counties, respectively.

Kamket has filed the case at Kabarnet High Court, arguing that the creation of Kapedo as the headquarters for Suguta Sub County unlawfully alters the boundaries of Tiaty Constituency.

He claims that this move attempts to resolve boundary issues indirectly and infringes on the rights of Tiaty residents to fair administrative action.

On Mukutani, the MP says the boundary between Tiaty and Baringo South is an act which ultra vires as it is against the statutory provisions of the National Coordination Act which only mandates the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to alter boundaries of constituencies.

Kamket describes the gazettement as illegal calling on the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to halt its implementation until the court case is heard and determined.

The mention of the case will be heard on 14th January 2025.

The recent naming of Mukutani as the headquarters of the new Ilchamus Sub County in Baringo has sparked protests among residents of Tiaty.

The town, located on the border between Tiaty East and Baringo South Sub Counties, has been the subject of longstanding disputes between the Pokot and Ilchamus communities, both claiming ownership.

Tensions have previously resulted in violence, including the deaths of 11 people in 2017.

Local leaders and residents, including Tangulbei Member of County Assembly Shedrack Mailuk, have voiced concerns about the potential for renewed conflict, urging the government to relocate the headquarters to a neutral location.

They argue that naming Mukutani as the headquarters could escalate animosity between the two communities.

Musa Akol, a Pokot elder, also called for the government and the Ilchamus community to consider an alternative town to ensure lasting peace, which has prevailed in the area for the past year.

The controversy arose just weeks after President William Ruto officially recognized the Ilchamus community's status by awarding them a sub-county during the Maa Culture Week.

A 25-year-old man from Kasisit, Baringo County was arrested on Tuesday evening after the decomposing body of his wife was found inside his house.
Dennis Kipsang was apprehended by police after neighbors, disturbed by a foul smell emanating from his house, broke in and discovered the decomposing body of 21-year-old Sharon Chelagat, with a wire around her neck.

Baringo North OCPD Mohamed Abdi, while confirming the incident, said that preliminary reports indicate the man killed Chelagat five days ago, allegedly motivated by a love triangle.
