Have you encountered the kinds of people who will be there for you when you hit that rock bottom. Not in a helpful way but in a weird way. They're mostly close friends or relatives. Probably you lost your job or your business went down & life's issues are on your neck, maybe school fees, rent or even putting food on the table becomes a problem. They will always call to find out if you're okay, seem to be empathetic et al. The only thing is that they will not help in any tangible way, they could if they wanted but nooo they're simply not doing it. Just useless visits & phone calls to appear like they care. Once you look like you're bouncing back & getting your life together, they mysteriously disappear. No more phone calls or visits. They even avoid you entirely. These characters exhibit a phenomenon referred to as “schadenfreude” by psychologists. They find joy & comfort in other people's misfortunes & suffering. In some instances they can be quite a menace when in positions of power & leadership. They will create suffering for others just to bloat their own ego because it's a source of enjoyment for them. It's a very common thing in our society.

In a small village, there was a healer named Mama Njeri. She was renowned for her knowledge of herbs and remedies, and people from neighboring villages came to seek her help. Mama Njeri loved helping others but found herself overwhelmed with requests at all hours of the day and night.

One evening, as Mama Njeri was preparing her dinner, a villager knocked on her door. "Mama Njeri, my child has a fever," the villager said urgently. Mama Njeri, though tired, got up to help. The same thing happened the next night, and the next, until Mama Njeri was completely exhausted.

Seeing her struggle, her granddaughter Amina suggested, "Grandmother, you need to set boundaries. Tell the villagers you can only see them during certain hours unless it’s an emergency." Mama Njeri agreed and announced her new visiting hours.

At first, the villagers were unhappy, but soon they respected her time. Mama Njeri found she had more energy and could provide even better care. The villagers learned to respect her boundaries, understanding that even the best healer needed time to rest and recharge.

In the heart of the Serengeti, there lived a kind and gentle elephant named Tembo. Tembo was known for his willingness to help anyone in need. One day, the mischievous monkey, Jabari, decided to take advantage of Tembo's kindness. "Tembo, can you help me reach the bananas at the top of that tree?" Jabari asked. Tembo agreed and lifted Jabari high up, where the monkey greedily gathered all the bananas and didn't share a single one.

The next day, Jabari returned with another request. "Tembo, can you help me cross the river?" Again, Tembo obliged, carrying Jabari on his back. This went on for days, with Jabari asking for more and more favors without giving anything in return.

Finally, the wise old tortoise, Kazi, noticed what was happening. "Tembo," Kazi said, "it’s good to help others, but you need to set boundaries. If you don't, others will take advantage of your kindness."

Tembo took this advice to heart. The next time Jabari came with a request, Tembo said, "I can help you, but you must share your bananas and help me in return." Jabari was taken aback but realized he had no choice. From that day on, Tembo helped others but made sure his kindness was reciprocated, teaching Jabari and others the importance of respecting boundaries.
