On this World Minority Day the country stands with Turkana and other minority communities of North Eastern Kenya, honoring their resilience, culture, and rights.

For the Turkana, as well as communities such as the Borana, Gabra, Rendille, Somali minority clans, and other smaller groups, minority status has often meant limited infrastructure, recurrent insecurity, climate vulnerability, and historical neglect. Drought, conflict over resources, and weak access to education, healthcare, and water have deepened inequalities, despite the resilience and rich traditions of these peoples.

Today at State House, Nairobi, the President joined minority communities to mark this important day reaffirming the commitment to inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunity for all.

The ATEKER Leadership Council meeting in Lodwar marked a significant milestone in regional cooperation, with three Member States endorsing a joint work plan aimed at pacifying border communities along the Uganda–South Sudan–Kenya frontier.

Ethiopia requested additional time to undertake further consultations on its potential participation, while clearly expressing goodwill and a positive disposition toward the overall process.

The signing was witnessed by EAC, AU and IGAD

The Etic Women Group, led by Mary Longorio, is a women-led agribusiness enterprise based in Nadapal that integrates primary agricultural production with value addition to strengthen food security and livelihoods.

With technical and institutional support from ChildFund and Frontier Organization, the group has transitioned from subsistence farming into a structured enterprise focused on sweet potato value chains.

The group cultivates sweet potatoes and applies value addition by processing the raw produce into sweet potato crisps and flour.

The group operates from Nadapal, LOIMA, and they have a warehouse which functions as a central hub for storage, processing, and aggregation of produce.

Yesterday at Tobong’u Lore cultural exhibition, the group strategically rented space within the exhibition tents to showcase and market their value-added products.

According to Mary Longorio, collective enterprise has significantly transformed the socio-economic status of the women involved.

UPDATES: During the Tobong’u Lore festival, President William Ruto unveiled key development initiatives for Turkana County, including:

- Turkana University Hostels project worth KES 620 million..

- Additional hostels accommodating at least 6,000 students in technical and vocational institutions.

- KES 500 million for tarmacking Lodwar roads.

- KES 500 million for Lodwar Airstrip expansion.

- KES 900 million to enhance stadium facilities, boosting arts and sports infrastructure.

The President promised to launch this projects in a year time including awarding of Turkana University Charter.

Ugandan MP Hon. Abraham has lauded improved security and conflict resolution in borderland communities, crediting member states and security agencies for swiftly addressing livestock related conflicts.
