The IMF has cautioned Kenya against taking on more debt, citing a high risk of debt distress.
During a Q&A session, IMF Communications Director Julie Kozack urged the government to carefully evaluate new loans, including a proposed $1.5 billion facility from the UAE, within a broader fiscal strategy to reduce vulnerabilities.

Kenya's debt stands at approximately Sh10.6 trillion, with domestic debt at Sh5.41 trillion and servicing obligations of Sh1.85 trillion for the 2024/25 fiscal year.
Recent protests forced President Ruto to withdraw a revenue-raising Finance Bill, leaving borrowing as a key option.

The IMF has set conditions for new loans, including increasing tax revenues, cutting subsidies, reducing government waste, and improving governance.
Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke is scheduled to visit Kenya in December for further discussions.
