UPDATES: Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned Boyd Were and Philip Aroko, the frontrunners in the Kasipul parliamentary by-election, amid rising violence that threatens to disrupt the polls.

Today, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon announced that hearings would begin on Monday, November 17, warning that disqualifications could follow depending on the outcomes.

“We are aware of the incidents of violence in Kasipul. Once we received reports, we sent our investigation team to the ground. They completed their work, and we now have the final report,” Ethekon stated.

He added, “The Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee has been empaneled and will begin summoning the candidates in Kasipul on Monday.”

The summons follows violent clashes that left two people dead and several others injured. Both Were and Aroko have accused each other of orchestrating the unrest, while denying responsibility for the violence.
