Statement from the Governor of Turkana County on the Miss Tourism Contestants at the 'Eighth Turkana Tourism and Cultural Festival 2024'
"Last evening, as I sat in the audience, I felt a profound sense of shame. It became painfully clear that our girls have strayed far from their cultural roots and identities. None of them could name any artifact used during meals in the Turkana culture," says Hon. Jeremiah Lomorukai.
He expressed concern over the alarming reality that our cultural knowledge is dwindling, which in turn erodes our sense of self. He urged the council of elders to take charge and run awareness programs across the county to address issues related to our culture.
Do you think our elders have a role to play? Are they capable of the task assigned? Leave your feedback in the comments section below!

UGANDA: Several Ugandan MPs arrested on Wednesday following chaotic scenes in the parliament during discussions on the controversial National Coffee Amendment Bill, 2024.
The bill sparked a heated debate due to its proposed changes to the coffee sector particularly the restructuring of the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and its regulation of coffee production and marketing.
Opposition MPs have been vocal in their objection to the bill, arguing that it will undermine local farmers and the coffee industry's autonomy.
They claim the bill is designed to benefit large coffee exporters at the expense of local producers.
During the session, tensions escalated when MPs clashed over procedural issues, leading to physical altercations and a brief suspension of proceedings.

In a poignant ceremony that bridges the past with the present, Prof. Malachy Ekal Imana celebrated a traditional wedding that he refers to as a simulation, a heartfelt tribute to his first wife, Sylvia Nayoki Ekal, who tragically passed away nearly 50 years ago.
This event was not merely a cultural formality; it served as a powerful affirmation of his enduring love and commitment to Sylvia, whose memory has shaped his life in profound ways. The traditional wedding symbolizes a reclamation of the bond that transcends time, allowing Hon. Ekal to honor his late wife and the life they once shared, while also acknowledging the importance of cultural heritage in his journey.
As the former Turkana Senator, Hon. Ekal has long grappled with the haunting realization that his church wedding was dismissed as irrelevant by the elders within the Turkana community. This dismissal weighed heavily on his conscience, compelling him to undertake this traditional ceremony as a means of solidifying his rightful place within his family's lineage and asserting his complete ownership of his children.
By embracing the customs of his ancestors, he seeks not only to validate his relationship with Sylvia but also to forge a deeper connection with the values and traditions that define his identity as a Turkana elder.
