This week, we introduce to you Drawing inspiration from nature, people, architecture, and the resilient Turkana culture, known for their vibrant attire and jewelry, JoDesign brings forth a unique blend of influences into its creation. JoDesign, a fashion label founded and spearheaded by the talented designer Jonas Ndatabaye Balugurha, was established in 2021. The brand swiftly gained recognition for its dedication to crafting top-notch, enduring garments that resonate with a discerning global and local audience, particularly for its meticulous attention to detail and utilization of Ankara fabrics, renowned for their lively patterns and luxurious textures. What sets JoDesign apart in the competitive fashion landscape is its distinctive fusion of contemporary aesthetics with traditional artisanal techniques like beading and weaving.

This photoshoot was inspired by the beauty of these classy ladies and the beautiful banks of R. Turkwel. Both Emelyne and Hafsa are from the Kakuma Refugee Camp. We met at a non profit organisation equipping young adults from rural Turkana with IT and media skills.
I just approached them one evening and told them I have an idea of a photoshoot. The rest is history.

There are so many types of shopping bags but we choose a specific bag that resembles a sack. It has spaces in between which we use to crochet. Knitting in simple terms.
It is cheap to find or acquire, and you can even borrow from friends if you can't get one. I learnt all these through a friend who told me she went for classes. Due to boredom and few interactions with friends, I chose to learn all these during the pandemic.

Through the decades Akitom, Etuo and the Akurum were some of the containers that were used by the Turkana community to store and preserve milk and oil.
Common parts apart from the containers are the handles (Akodet) mostly made of leather (Amuny), lid (Apukenit) either made of Ibole/Abei and beads.
