Bungoma High School: A Giant's Revival

Once an academic and sports powerhouse in Western Kenya, Bungoma High School had fallen from grace, plagued by greed, dishonesty, and sabotage. But a new era of hope and restoration dawned with the arrival of Enock Andanje Musambai as the school's principal. Tasked with revitalizing the institution, Musambai quickly set about restoring its former glory.

"I was posted here on a mission to revive the institution, both academically and infrastructurally," Musambai told TDN LIVE. "We have fast-paced the assignment, and as we speak, Bungoma High is back on the map."

In just three years, the school has made tremendous strides, with the most recent achievement being the acquisition of a brand new 67-seater Scania bus worth over KES 19 million. This significant milestone was made possible through the combined efforts of the Parents Association, the Board of Management, and other stakeholders.

Musambai remains optimistic about the future, urging the school community to maintain their unity and commitment. "I am glad the dream I had for Bungoma High School is turning into a reality. More is yet to come."

Champions Crashers: The Brown Saints Extend Their Tradition in Uganda

The Brown Saints, also known as JOBO, continued their impressive tradition in the 2024 FEASSSA Games in Mbale, Uganda, with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Uganda’s national champions, St. Juliana, in the rankings match. JOBO’s triumph in Uganda cements their reputation as one of Kenya’s high school soccer powerhouses.

Since the 2024 season began, JOBO has been on a winning streak, toppling Kenya's 2023 champions in the county championships, securing the regional trophy, and earning third place nationally. This qualified them for the FEASSSA Games, where they only lost one match against Uganda's formidable 14-time champions, St. Mary's Kitende. Prior to that, they made headlines by defeating Kenya’s 2024 national champions, Highway High School, with a resounding 3-0 win in the group stage.

JOBO’s head coach, Sir Cosmas Nabungolo, expressed pride in the team’s achievements, stating, “We were testing how it looks like to play on the multi-national stage with a first-timers squad. We now know the rules of the game and shall come back stronger in the next edition.” His words underscore JOBO’s commitment to excellence and their bright future in high school sports.

JOBO is a force to reckon with in Kenya's high school games going forward.

On August 16th, the serene village of Sibanga, nestled in the heart of Cherang’any, Trans Nzoia, came alive with celebration and gratitude. The community gathered to witness a life-changing moment for one of their own—Jennifer Akalitete, a 73-year-old widow, finally receiving the keys to her new home.

: Strict Rules, High Stakes, and a Call for Gold!

As the FEASSSA Games 2024 approach, Uganda's Sports Minister, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has set the tone with a clear and powerful message: **"Non bonafide players are strictly not allowed to play in our games."**

This statement underscores the seriousness with which the competition will be conducted, ensuring that only legitimate and eligible players participate. It's a strong reminder to all teams that fairness and integrity are at the heart of the FEASSSA Games.

Hon. Ogwang didn't stop there; he laid down a challenge to the Ugandan teams as they head to Bukedea: **"You are not going for merry making; you are going for a competition. Make sure you bring gold medals to Uganda."**

With these words, the stakes have never been higher. The call to bring home gold reflects the high expectations placed on the athletes. As the games draw closer, one thing is certain—this year's FEASSSA Games will be a fierce competition, where only the best will rise to the top.

Will Team Kenya beat this expectation?
Let the games begin! 🏅

🇺🇬 Uganda is ready to defend its title at the 2024 FEASSSA Games in Bukedea!
During the flag-off ceremony on August 14th, USSSA President Mr. Justice Mugisha highlighted the nation’s strong preparation and teamwork. With participation in four international championships this year alone, Uganda is aiming high to retain the overall winner's title.
The strategy includes large participation numbers, cost-sharing among parents, schools, and the government, ensuring that no stone is left unturned.
Uganda is also building capacity for athletes to excel beyond FEASSSA, at both youth and elite stages.
*Can we say the same for Kenya!*

Clarion Call: Expanding KSSSA Nationals to 16 Teams for a More Inclusive and Competitive Tournament

In light of recent research conducted by Trans West Digital Network on improving the Term Two Games in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports calendar, various stakeholders are calling for a significant change in the KSSSA Nationals format. The proposal is to expand the number of participating teams from 8 to 16, allowing each of the eight regions to produce two teams. This expansion would ensure that more talents, currently left behind due to the narrow competition window, have the opportunity to showcase their skills at the national level.

This initiative aims to prevent the unfortunate elimination of deserving teams due to bad luck in a single match, making the Nationals not only more competitive but also more meaningful. A six-day event could easily accommodate the introduction of quarter-finals, enabling this expansion to be seamlessly integrated into the existing schedule.

The call to action from stakeholders across the sporting community is clear: It’s time to give our young athletes the platform they deserve by broadening the Nationals. This change would ensure no talent is left behind and would significantly enhance the future of Kenyan sports. Let’s make this vision a reality!

Why Lacrosse Should Be Included in Future KSSSA Games

Lacrosse, introduced in the 2024 KSSSA National Games at Kisii High School by Lacrosse President Cosmas Nabungolo, has sparked significant excitement among players and spectators alike. Its fast-paced nature, strategic gameplay, and unique blend of skill and athleticism captivated the audience, showcasing the sport's potential to enrich the diversity of Kenyan school sports. Including Lacrosse in future editions of the KSSSA Games would not only broaden students' exposure to global sports but also foster teamwork and resilience among young athletes.

Kenya and Uganda: A Sporting Duopoly

Kenya and Uganda have established themselves as the powerhouses of the FEASSSA Games, consistently sweeping the majority of the titles.
In the 2023 edition, Uganda’s St. Mary’s School Kitende and Buddo Secondary School, alongside Kenya’s Namwela Secondary and Kwanthanze Secondary, dominated in sports like soccer, volleyball, basketball, and handball.

This trend isn't new, For instance, Uganda’s dominance in soccer, basketball, and netball, and Kenya’s supremacy in volleyball, rugby, and athletics are well-documented. The competition at the FEASSSA Games is often seen as a two-horse race between these two giants, with other nations struggling to keep up.
For Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Burundi to emerge as serious contenders, a concerted effort must be made to bridge the gap. Until then, Kenya and Uganda will continue to set the pace, leaving their East African neighbors trailing in their wake. The question remains: how long will this duopoly last, and what will it take for the other nations to rise to the challenge?
