We did forget to celebrate Kenyan legend Musa Juma.
Born on the 6th of December 1970, Musa Juma Mumbo hails from Nyadorera Location, in the Uranga Division of the larger Siaya County in Nyanza. He was commonly known to his fans as Jasiaya Kababa or Wuod Usonga. Musa Juma, until his death on March 15th, 2011, was and is still hailed as one of the greatest musicians of the Rumba and Benga genre of music in Kenya. He was the bandleader, composer, and guitarist for Orchestra Limpopo International, a band primarily singing in Dholuo, his native language. The following article covers Musa Juma songs.
Musa Juma grew up in Homa Bay County. Born to a peasant family, his childhood was heavily characterized by hardship, struggles, and a lot of ridicule from the community and society at large. Musa’s father was polygamous, as is common among many Luo families, with three wives and a total of eighteen children. Musa was born to the second wife. Their father, a policeman, had to cater for all of them from his low wage. In an interview, he talked abouta how his dad earned a monthly wage of around Ksh 2800 around the 1970s and 1980s. This made it difficult to get by; accessing every form of basic need was basically a challenge.In his earlier years, Musa’s family mostly depended on farming, especially after their father retired in 1984. Their compound had dilapidated houses that were a clear reflection of their family’s poverty. The condition was so bad that they hurdled up at one corner of the house during rains due to leaking roofs. During these times, Musa was completely devastated and repeatedly prayed to God, continuously asking why they were in abject poverty. He said in an interview,
“I have walked in tatters and literally tasted poverty in every sense of the word.”
