Back when I was starting out, finding a mentor was hard. Like, “figure-it-out-via-random-YouTube-videos and Google Docs titled ‘Final Final v6’” kind of hard. 😅

Fast forward to last week at the NOVUS Africa 2025 Cohort 1 unveiling.... and wow, the tables have officially turned. I found myself in a room full of sharp thinkers, bold builders, and fearless dreamers who are actually being backed by a solid support system.

From government reps to techies to trailblazers, we weren’t just clapping for innovation. We were challenging it, dissecting it, and most importantly, supporting it.

And this new cohort? They’re not just potential. They’re pressure. The good kind. The “we’re-about-to-change-the-game-and-look-good-while-doing-it” kind. 💻🔥

Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it. Honored to walk alongside these brilliant humans.

The payoff is the end of your video 🎬, where you satisfy the curiosity gap. This is where your audience decides if they’ll follow you, unfollow, leave a comment, or share your video 📱. It’s the Defining The Relationship (DTR) moment! 💬

In these last moments, decide if you want to offer a satisfying payoff ✅ or create an unsatisfying one 😳 to elicit more emotions. You can also tease a Part 2 🔄 or ask for engagement-like comments 👇, encouraging your audience to participate.

🔮Flash Forward Examples

You might show something cool upfront (like a hidden feature or creative trick) and then backtrack to explain how you got there! 🤩 Example: If you show a sleek invisible cabinet that blends with the wall, your audience will want to know how it works, drawing them in to keep watching!

Did you know the first 6 seconds of your video determine whether people stay or scroll away?

When your hook doesn’t capture attention fast, viewers will bounce. A hook is the first part of your content that grabs attention usually within the first 3 to 6 seconds of a video. If your hook doesn’t capture attention fast, viewers will bounce, no matter how good the rest of the video is. Aim for 90% viewer retention within this short window to please the algorithm and boost your reach. 🚀

🎣 What makes a powerful hook?
🔴 Your hook should always include two key ingredients: An emotional trigger 😲😂😡 Make your viewer feel something immediately; shock, curiosity, laughter, fear, or even outrage. Example: “What I’m about to say will offend some people…” (triggers curiosity + tension). Decide upfront: What do I want them to feel; laugh, learn, or react?

Create a sense of mystery or suspense.
Say just enough to hook them, but leave out the “punchline” or solution until later. Example: “I used to make this mistake every day, until I found out what it was costing me…” These two elements make people want to watch to the end. Without them, your video will feel flat and easy to skip.

✔️ Prank or challenge videos do this too: a quick setup, then build-up, then the surprise.

Friday Musing: Kenya’s Social Media Scene – Who’s Winning?

Another week down, and if there’s one thing Kenyans never disappoint in, it’s keeping the digital streets lively! From endless TikTok dances to Twitter/X debates that feel like Supreme Court hearings, our social media scene is always buzzing.

But let’s talk numbers. According to the latest Communications Authority of Kenya report, here’s who’s ruling the digital kingdom:

👑 Facebook – Still the OG, leading with 57.1% of users. People won’t leave, maybe because their aunts are still forwarding those “Good Morning” texts. ☕
💬 WhatsApp – Close behind at 54.4%. This is where Kenyans run entire businesses, family meetings, and, let’s be honest, neighborhood gossip.
📱 TikTok – At 29.5%, it’s proving that Kenyans love vibes, challenges, and conspiracy theories about everything from fuel prices to football matches.
📺 YouTube – With 26.2%, it's home to the patient ones who can sit through a whole documentary—or at least pretend to while skipping to the juicy part.
📸 Instagram (12.9%) – Mostly influencers, food bloggers, and people flexing “soft life” (even if it’s just tea and bread with a fancy filter).
