Health CAS, Dr. Rashid Aman & Deputy Ambassador, Germany Embassy in Kenya, Mr. Thomas Wimmer on Friday launched the Centre of Excellence in Pharmaceutical Innovations and Analysis as well as the Dual Vocational Training for Pharmaceutical Production Specialists at USIU-Africa.

“Today’s celebration demonstrates that the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences of USIU-Africa is alive to current, emerging and future market demands by the sector and is innovating to respond,” Dr Aman said.

The CAS noted that USIU-Africa through its School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has been part of several initiatives to support our national health agenda.

Among the initiatives is the launch of a short course on immunization and vaccines management in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya for capacity building of healthcare providers to enhance safe and effective deployment of vaccines.

The CAS noted that through a multi-institution collaborative effort, USIU - Africa has also initiated development of a natural product based supplement that is currently under review for application on home-based COVID-19 patient care.

“These efforts that contribute to promoting quality healthcare for all deserve applaud,” said the CAS.

The Kenya Pharmaceutical Industry 2020 Diagnostic Report commissioned by World Bank IFC found that Kenya’s pharma industry is the largest in the Common Market for the East & southern Africa region. Despite this, Kenya imports about 70%of its requirement of pharmaceuticals.

Dr Aman observed that the challenges that face the pharmaceutical industry in Kenya are known and recommended that the cost of production, taxation and regulatory regimes need to be reviewed and addressed to provide a competitive edge to local manufacturing.

He said the Government is committed to instituting and executing supportive legal, policy, and regulatory frameworks to create an enabling environment for pharmaceutical manufacturing to thrive.
