In a small village among the beautiful landscapes of rural China it was customary for girls to undergo the practice of foot binding. The painful process began when they were very young, as early as five or six years old.

This practice involved tightly wrapping the feet in bandages, breaking the arches and curling the toes beneath the soles. The pain was excruciating, and it left the girls struggling to walk.

The reason for this tradition was a belief that small, bound feet were a symbol of beauty, status, and desirability. Families believed it would secure a better future for their daughters.

For the girls affected by this practice, it often meant the abandonment of dreams and passions. They were bound not only by the bandages but also by the societal norms and expectations of their time.

Over time, attitudes began to shift, and the practice of foot binding started to decline in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a gradual process, but it marked the end of a deeply painful tradition.
