As Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appeals to voters, he invokes a classic political question: Are you better off now than four years ago? However, a closer look at the data reveals a more complex picture. In 2020, during Trump’s final year in office, U.S. life expectancy fell by 1.8 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which claimed over 350,000 lives, making it the third-leading cause of death. The economy suffered a historic downturn, with GDP plummeting at a 28% annual rate in the second quarter.

Despite a rebound later in 2020, the economy was still smaller at the end of Trump's term than it had been at the end of 2019. By comparison, recent data indicates that as of the third quarter of 2023, the economy has grown 11.5% since then, with inflation-adjusted output rising 2.66% year-over-year, similar to pre-COVID growth rates.

Inflation, which peaked in 2022 at levels not seen since the 1980s, has remained a focal point of Trump’s campaign. While inflation has declined, many Americans are still grappling with high prices, leading to mixed perceptions of the economy. Although inflation-adjusted income per person is up 10% compared to 2019, the perception of high prices continues to overshadow this progress.

The unemployment rate has also seen improvement, remaining lower on average from 2022 to 2024 compared to the pre-pandemic years. For those invested in the stock market or real estate, household net worth has increased in the post-COVID period.

In summary, while Trump's narrative emphasizes discontent with current economic policies, a range of metrics indicates a more nuanced economic landscape compared to the tumultuous final year of his presidency.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has criticized Kenyans for their discontent with President William Ruto's administration regarding economic upliftment initiatives. In a detailed social media post, she questioned the public's opposition to efforts to secure funding, both locally and internationally, for major infrastructure projects.

Kihika emphasized the importance of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in financing multi-billion-shilling projects, arguing that without such collaborations, the government would struggle to address infrastructure needs like the dualling of the Rironi-Mau Summit Road and the completion of the Itaare Dam and Lanet Airport.

"Where is he supposed to get this money from? He wasn’t a magician," she remarked, urging Kenyans to allow the president time to achieve fiscal balance. She called for a more positive national attitude, stating, "We have become extremely negative as a people. Very cynical and dare I say almost unpatriotic." Kihika stressed the need for sustainable development solutions through PPPs to secure a prosperous future for Kenya.

The decision marks a significant setback for the President’s agenda to reshape the political landscape.

Starting next year, the Kenyan government will implement a database tracking all mobile phones in the country, indexed by their unique 15-digit IMEI numbers. This initiative aims to provide authorities with backdoor access to users' activities, including location patterns, transactions, and communication history. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is spearheading this move to combat tax evasion and enhance revenue collection. Critics, however, have raised concerns over privacy and surveillance implications as the government tightens its grip on digital activity.

Kenya is under fire from the international community after reportedly deporting four Turkish nationals to Turkey. The move has sparked concerns from British and U.S. intelligence officials, who have called on the Kenyan government to address the rising number of abductions targeting human rights defenders and government critics. Critics argue that such actions undermine the country's commitment to human rights and the protection of dissent. The situation has raised alarm about the safety of activists and the potential for increased repression in the region.
