As Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appeals to voters, he invokes a classic political question: Are you better off now than four years ago? However, a closer look at the data reveals a more complex picture. In 2020, during Trump’s final year in office, U.S. life expectancy fell by 1.8 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which claimed over 350,000 lives, making it the third-leading cause of death. The economy suffered a historic downturn, with GDP plummeting at a 28% annual rate in the second quarter.

Despite a rebound later in 2020, the economy was still smaller at the end of Trump's term than it had been at the end of 2019. By comparison, recent data indicates that as of the third quarter of 2023, the economy has grown 11.5% since then, with inflation-adjusted output rising 2.66% year-over-year, similar to pre-COVID growth rates.

Inflation, which peaked in 2022 at levels not seen since the 1980s, has remained a focal point of Trump’s campaign. While inflation has declined, many Americans are still grappling with high prices, leading to mixed perceptions of the economy. Although inflation-adjusted income per person is up 10% compared to 2019, the perception of high prices continues to overshadow this progress.

The unemployment rate has also seen improvement, remaining lower on average from 2022 to 2024 compared to the pre-pandemic years. For those invested in the stock market or real estate, household net worth has increased in the post-COVID period.

In summary, while Trump's narrative emphasizes discontent with current economic policies, a range of metrics indicates a more nuanced economic landscape compared to the tumultuous final year of his presidency.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has criticized Kenyans for their discontent with President William Ruto's administration regarding economic upliftment initiatives. In a detailed social media post, she questioned the public's opposition to efforts to secure funding, both locally and internationally, for major infrastructure projects.
