Junior Secondary School intern teachers who have been protesting for the past few weeks seeking permanent employment terms have started receiving alleged termination letters from their employer.

The Star has seen letters reportedly sent to the interns by the Teachers Service Commission dated June 6, noting that their employment has been terminated "on grounds of professional misconduct."

"In view of the above, the Commission has decided to terminate your Internship engagement with effect from June 6, 2024, on the grounds that you engaged in acts of professional misconduct in that you deserted duty with effect from May 13, 2024, to date while engaged as an Intern teacher," the termination letter read in part.

Our efforts to reach TSC through phone calls and text for a comment on the alleged letters of termination were not responded to by the time of going to press.

TSC noted that on May 22, it sent out show-cause letters to the interns for missing school as they were protesting.

TSC asked the interns to submit a response on the matter within 14 days, failure to which the intended action would finally be taken.

"Reference is made to the show cause letter 22 May 2024 in which you were accorded an opportunity to explain the reasons why your engagement as an intern should not be terminated on account of professional misconduct," TSC said.

"The Commission has carefully considered your response and found me same to be unsatisfactory."

A permanent teacher based in Nairobi who sought anonymity said the information has even been passed to other teachers in the staffroom.

"Two of our interns who were actively taking part in the protests have received the termination letters," he said.

The government has set a new record in eCitizen revenue collection months after President William Ruto directed the use of a single pay bill number and digitisation of all government services.

In a statement dated December 21, Immigration and Citizen Services PS Julius Bitok noted that the daily revenue collection on the digital platform crossed Ksh900 million for the first time.

The PS revealed that eCitizen collected a total of Ksh903.6 million, Ksh223,714,916 ($1,446,495) of which was collected in dollars on Wednesday, December 20.

The figure marks a steady rise in monies collected through the platform following Ruto's directive to all state agencies to onboard all their services on the eCitizen platform by the end of this year.

The President had also directed that all other pay bill numbers be deactivated and all payments channelled through a consolidated pay bill, 222222.

Bitok further revealed that since the directives were made, roughly 14,000 services have been onboarded onto the digital platform.

The development later saw the collected revenue increase to an average of Ksh300 million per day last month.
