H.E. Pst Janepher Mbatiany-Bungoma Deputy Governor ~Good morning, everyone.

First, let me begin by acknowledging the concerns that have been raised regarding the Kapkugo Festival, particularly about the lack of representation of resident artists from our host community in the promotional materials. I deeply appreciate the feedback weโ€™ve received, and I want to assure you that your voices have been heard.

The Kapkugo Festival is, at its core, a celebration of the rich culture of the Kalenjin sub-tribes from across Kenya and Uganda. As the host community, Mt. Elgon plays a vital role in this celebration, and we recognize that the omission of local artists from the posters does not reflect our commitment to showcasing the region's cultural wealth.

To address this, we are already working to update all promotional materials to prominently feature our talented resident artists. Beyond that, we have set aside a dedicated segment in the festival program to spotlight local talent. This will include performances, exhibitions, and workshops led by our very own Mt. Elgon artists and cultural practitioners.

We understand that the festival must not only celebrate culture but also benefit and uplift our host community. The event will bring significant economic opportunities to Mt. Elgon, from increased tourism to local business participation. However, we know that representation matters, and we are committed to ensuring that the festival feels inclusive and reflective of the community hosting it.

To this end, I have scheduled a meeting with local artists and community representatives to discuss how we can further improve inclusivity in the festival. This dialogue will be ongoing, and I encourage everyone to continue sharing constructive feedback. Starting next week, we will also provide regular updates on the festival preparations to maintain transparency and build trust with you, the community.

Finally, I want to emphasize that the Kapkugo Festival is not just an event for visitorsโ€”itโ€™s your festival too. Letโ€™s come together to celebrate our culture, our identity, and our unity as a people. I invite everyone to join us at Kapsokwony Boys High School from the 5th to the 7th of December 2024. Letโ€™s make this an event to remember and a true reflection of Mt. Elgonโ€™s vibrant cultural spirit.

Thank you.

H.E. Pst. Janepher Chemtai Mbatiany,
Bungoma Deputy Governor.
