Hiroshi Shoji is one of the promising directors whose talent blew everyone away with his debut feature film "Ken and Kazu" which won the Best Picture Award at Japanese Cinema Splash section, the 28th Tokyo International Film Festival in 2015.
"Tatsumi" is his second feature film, depicts a man who has given up hope in the underworld and a girl who vows revenge.
The film premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival 2023 and is already attracting attention.

For Shinya Tsukamoto, it is 12th TIFF nominee after 5 years since "Zan".

He commented that "I am honored to be invited to the TIFF, which will be our North American premiere following the Venice IFF." And he added that "I would like to see how this story of the end of the war will be received by the people of North America."

During the preview selection of films, as the programmer, I found ALIVEHOON distinguished itself from the car racing genre films with an interesting twist pairing video games with real drifting! As a layman about drifting, I have learned a lot about what meant by drifting through the film. The drifting scenes were shot without any CGI was amazing and exciting to watch. Lastly I love the ending that is not a typical Hollywood "happy ending". Besides, there hasn't been any strong car racing movies coming out of Asia recently. These were the reasons I chose this film to show the diversity of our selection of Japan Cinema Showcase.
