A RARE AIR RAGTOP!
Jason Fields purchased the shell of a late ’55 Oval Window. The once plane jane sedan now sports a ragtop, semaphores, and crotch coolers. Jason not only installed these rare options, but he also manufactured most of them.

BUSES BY THE BRIDGE XXVI
Setting off the new year in a style as only they can, the London Bridge Bullis host over 500 Buses for the annual gathering known as Buses By the Bridge in beautiful Lake Havasu City, Arizona. As one of the largest VW Bus-only camping events in the country, enthusiasts from across the nation journey to the small desert oasis, home of the famous London Bridge.

THE 30-YEAR COUPE
Initially purchased in 1991, this 1959 Karmann Ghia was packed with parts and rolled into a storage unit, not to emerge until 2017. That’s when Steve Richardson finally decided it was time to give this coupe the attention it deserved.

SPECIAL MODEL #16
The truck featured within these pages is one of the rarest VW models. Yes, it looks like an ordinary crew cab, thus explaining why few folks know about this coachbuilt piece: a pre-VW factory-assembled truck called Binz double cab. Binz Gmbh & Co handled the conversion, based on single cab bodies converted into Double Cabs. Production count is about 550, i.e., less than Hebmüller’s 2-seater cabriolet production figure. Let’s see what’s so unique about the vehicle compared to the VW factory-produced double cab.

The cartel returned to the historic Redding Dragstrip for a second time in 2022, bringing with it the largest showing of VWs they have ever had at one single event.

THE KIDDIELAND FIRE TRUCKS
The “working class” models of the VW Transporter line, since their release, have been used to haul all levels of business assets. Tall versions for nurseries and clothes cleaners, wide bed models for large items, and even special adaptations for medical use and even firefighting. These serious-minded creations have all been built to do the job that needs to be done, and the Volkswagen basis underneath them did just that.

DUNE BUGGY LEGACY
Dune Buggies played an essential role in defining hotVWs Magazine during the 1960s. Many of these fiberglass creations graced our pages back then, though readers made do with black and white pictures. Decades later, we often wondered how these images looked in color – until we found hundreds of them in a filing box. It was a magical moment.

GO NARDO!
In 1985, Anthony Bell chose his first Volkswagen for no particular reason – he simply wanted an affordable “A-to-B transportation” with good gas mileage. However, he quickly discovered the pure joy of driving a VW and being able to tinker around with it, leading to his 4-decade- long involvement in our scene.

ABURATSUBO VW SHOW & SHINE
Hosted by hotVWs Magazine’s publisher Shin Mukai, the inaugural Aburatsubo VW Show & Shine catered to Volkswagen fans on the other side of the globe. It provided a campout, a show & shine, a swap meet, live music performances, a hula dance show, and many other fun activities in a unique location – a whole new experience for the Japanese VW scene.

HOT ROD 36HP MOTOR V2.0
Last month, we showed you the process of taking my 1397cc 36-horse hot rod V1.0 motor apart. After inspection, we gladly discovered that the components were in good shape – nothing was wrong with the engine. Then, we mocked up the new 74mm stroker crankshaft, AA Performance H-beam rods, and smaller base camshaft. But before starting the assembly, we still had another important step: getting the parts balanced.

THE MAGNIFICENT ‘67
Some Volkswagen enthusiasts get deeply attached to certain air-cooled models. Take DKK club member Darrin Dugan who has only owned Cal Look ’67s since the 1980s. Here is his latest project car, a superbly finished sedan equipped with a furious 227-horse 2386cc motor!

PICTURE THE PAST ‘75-’89
For this California Look-oriented issue, we went digging through hotVWs Magazine’s extensive archives for photos related to the topic. Boy, did we find some gems! Our selection, which covers the 1970s and ’80s, shows the fast evolution of the style, influenced by technology, fashion, and custom trends.

THE RED ALERT ‘63
Living on the French Riviera where you typically need a fancy Italian supercar to impress the crowd, Olivier Boggio chose a different and seemingly humbler route with his 219-horsepower ’63 Ragtop. And locals absolutely love it.

2022 SEMA SHOW
Well, the dust has settled on SEMA (Speciality Equipment Market Association), the buildings are empty, and the booths are packaged and ready to be shipped back to the designated companies that displayed for four days at the Las Vegas convention center.
EL SAPO!
Born and raised in Madera, California, Fred Espinoza grew up with classic American cars and trucks as his parents always owned domestic cars – he still drives and wrenches on a V8 truck today. But when turning 28 years old, he got hooked on a little car from the other side of the globe...

One of the most incredible supporters of our hobby, BBT is located near Antwerp, Belgium. The company hosts an open house and convoy prior to Germany’s international vintage Volkswagen show in Hessisch Oldendorf.

A TRANSFORMED TRANSPORTER
It's easy to forget that today’s highly sought-after air-cooled VWs which are being restored and cherished were once just daily driver cars, often discarded after their useful years were behind them. Such was the case for Erik Thorsen’s gorgeous ’60 double cab.

"Aburatsubo Show & Shine" is over.
11月13日 日曜日に油壺温泉キャンプパークで開催させて頂きました "Aburatsubo Show & Shine" は、前週からの悪天気予報にも関わらず午前中は晴天で午後には一時雨もパラつきましたが200台オーバーのShow Car & Camping show、60件オーバーのDealer & Flea Market、8件の地元三浦の商店さま、8件の飲食店さまに出展頂き、"オシャレルズ" ライブ、"カレイマカマエ" フラダンスと無事終了させて頂きました。
エントリー、出展、ご来場、イベント開催にご尽力頂きました皆様、ありがとうございました!!!!!!!!!!

＊ R26 引橋を通過後信号のない右折路からの経路は道幅が狭く又、住宅地を通るため騒音対策からもご遠慮ください。

また、三浦の海産物、農作物、ハワイアングッズ、ワンチャングッズの出店もありますのでクーラーボックスを持ってきて頂きお土産にお買い求めください。
三浦、湘南、横浜でドーナツチェーンを展開しているミサキドーナツ三崎本店から手作りドーナツの販売を朝からしておりますので朝飯代わりにお召し上がり頂けます。

1956年フォルクスワーゲン　プロモーションフィルム「Palette Dansante」

1956年、フランクフルトのIAA（Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung、通称フランクフルトモーターショー）で初公開された「Palette Dansante」というショートフィルム。この映画は、1956年にドイツで最も古い広告代理店であるウィリアム・ウィルケンス社が制作し、ハンブルグ出身のクルト・ウォルフスが監督したものである。このフィルムの主な目的は、この年モデルのフォルクスワーゲン・ビートルの新色6色を紹介することであった。IAA終了後、このフィルムは、映画館で顧客に見せる「Händlerfilm（ショールーム・プロモーション）」としてディーラーに配られた。

アニメーションのシーンは、ヴィキング社の小さなVWモデルを使って作られた。台本はなく、すべてのシーンに同じダンサーが登場する。ナンバープレートには "Britischen Besatzungszone Hamburg"（イギリス占領地）を意味する "BH "が表示されているが、これは1956年にドイツのナンバープレートに変更された。

THE DAKOTA MONSTER
Looking at the pictures, some of you readers – even with the best eye for VWs – may find something peculiar about the appearance of this 1964 Double Cab Pickup. Sure enough, there is a lot going on with this truck dubbed “Dakota Monster”. It will undoubtedly blow some minds.

FOUR DAYS IN VW HEAVEN!
HO22: Hessisch Oldendorf international vintage Volkswagen show. Two days after we wrapped the massive three-week-long So Cal VW week, we took an international flight, flew over the Atlantic Ocean, and landed in Europe to cover a monster vintage VW treffen (which means meeting in English) held in Germany. Enjoy the best of the best – four days in vintage VW paradise.

SNOW WHITE WAGON
A Type 2 pickup that toured West Germany to promote a mortgage company. We are pleased to share with you this rarest-of-the-rare Type 2 from Germany, a custom-made single cab ordered by a local building society. Employees toured with this unique truck to promote one of their financial products in the late 1950s and early ’60s. This vehicle was a part of Germany's economic miracle after WWII.

TWEAKING THE ANTIQUE
Volkswagen had its Westfalia model very well sorted out by the time it discontinued the bay window in 1979. Yet Ian Hebner managed to add a few smart features, such as a pull-out kitchen and a different seating arrangement, making the vehicle both unique and practical.

EMPI OPEN HOUSE
Last year, Empi joined the So Cal VW event week with its new open house – it was a huge success. The well-known company did it again in 2022, inviting VW and Porsche fans to their headquarters for a day of fun activities.

Meyers Manx inc. (originally B.F. Meyers & co.) was taken over by two Manx enthusiasts in November 2020. This led to significant moves forward, starting with unveiling the new Meyers Manx model called Meyers Manx 2.0 EV this year.

ALL IN THE OHANA!
Born and raised in Hawaii, Tom Kinney moved to Crescent City, California 25 years ago, and enjoys a great life as a husband, father, grandpa, successful business owner and Volkswagen enthusiast/collector. His latest projects are this pair of ultimate race cars, yet still street legal, built for himself and his son-in-law with the support of his Ohana – that’s family in Hawaiian.

THE NEW CLASSIC WEEKEND! 2022
Many readers will be familiar with the VW classic. Some might have even been there and have great memories of this legendary So-Cal event. The first edition was held at Irvine meadows in 1985 and was considered by many as “the greatest VW show on earth” for almost three decades afterward. Yet it faded out after the promoters lost their long-run venue in 2014. Eight years later, the classic returns to Orange County!

OCTO SHOW SPLIT SPLASH!
The first weekend of the So Cal VW week did not provide enthusiasts much respite, with five events listed on the agenda. But for type 2 buffs, only one meet mattered: the OCTO show, which offered a special display of pg/sg buses. Not familiar with them? Read on...
