The manoeuvre of the floor levels, reflecting the height differences of three gardens and the ground,

【Design｜異国情緒のモノトーン Exotic monotone】

現代の食卓が面白いのは、前近代における『支配者層のうつわ』『庶民のうつわ』というような括りが希薄になり、さまざまな層の人がさまざまなうつわを楽しめるようになったことかもしれません。
であれば、唐津のやきものからも、『茶陶のうつわ』というしばりを解いてもよいのではないでしょうか。
「私はお茶の世界に疎いので……」などと気おくれしてしまう方も多いかもしれませんが、かつての数寄者・茶人たちの美意識はとても現代的。彼らのセンスを先入観で遠ざけてしまうのはもったいないと思います。
うつわの役割が時代とともに変わっていくのは自然な流れで、朝鮮唐津のうつわも、日々の食卓で使ってカジュアルに楽しみ、生かしていきたいものです…

What is interesting when looking at modern dining tables, I think, is that the pre-modern divisions such as “vessels of the ruling class” versus “vessels of the common people” have become less and less clear, and people from all walks of life can now enjoy a variety of different vessels.
If this is the case, then it may be possible to lift the restriction of “vessels for tea ceremony” from Karatsu ware too.
Many people may not feel very confident to use vessels for tea ceremonies regularly when they know very little about the art of tea ceremony, but we can learn from the aesthetic sense of suki-mono (cultured people) and tea masters in the past, which was very modern for its time. I think it would be a shame to let your preconceptions keep you away from their aesthetic sense.
It is a natural process that the role of vessels changes with the times, and we should enjoy chōsen-garatsu vessels in a more casual manner by using and energising them at the table on a daily basis.

【Architecture｜富士見の家 House in Fujimi】
・
夏季の別荘利用を想定した木造2階建ての建物。
涼を取るために大屋根を架けたテラスは、食堂兼リビングとして活躍している。
また家中に大量の蔵書を収める本棚を造作し、室内は図書館のような趣となった。

A two storey wooden building constructed as a second house for summer.
The terrace with a large roof, which is intended to mitigate heat, is actively used as a dining room and living room.
Many bookshelves were installed throughout the house to store the family's large collection of books, giving the inside of the house the feel of a library.

【Design｜染付がもたらす日常の風趣 Elegance of everyday life through sometsuke painted porcelain】
・
陶芸は、作り手の美的感覚や手先の器用さだけで成り立つのではなく、『化学』の力を借りて完成に導かれる工芸です。
書画の世界であれば、自分で描いたものがそのまま作品となりますが、陶芸の場合、土を成形して絵付けや施釉をしたらできあがり——というわけではなく、焼成という最終工程を経なければいけません。この工程が、土や絵具や釉薬に化学的な変化を及ぼし、陶芸という工芸に得も言われぬ深みを与えているのです。
大昔の作り手にとって、焼成による形質の変容は計算外で、作陶にあたってはさぞ頭を悩ませたことでしょう。
ただ、さまざまな試行錯誤が繰り返される中、偶然だと思えた変容の課程を経験知として蓄積させることで、陶芸は、作り手が（ある程度）完成形を想定できる工芸に進化していきました…

Ceramics is a craft that relies not only on the aesthetic sense and manual dexterity of the maker, but also on the dynamism of chemistry to bring it to completion.
In the world of painting and calligraphy, what you draw becomes the work of art, but in the case of ceramics, the work is not yet completed even though the clay is shaped, painted and glazed. The work must go through a final process of firing. This firing process chemically alters the clay, paint and glaze, giving the craft of ceramics an ineffable depth.
The transformation of the trait of shape and quality through firing must have been a headache for makers long ago, as it lay beyond their calculations.
However, through repeated trial and error, the process of transformation, which was thought to be accidental, gradually accumulated as data, and ceramics evolved into a craft whose creators could, to some extent, envision the finished form.

【Design｜長く愛され続ける北国の茶筒 Long-loved tea canisters from the north】

みなさんは、武家屋敷で有名な秋田県の角館に伝わる「樺細工（かばざいく）」という伝統工芸品をご存知でしょうか？
樺細工は、近隣で採れる山桜の良質な樹皮を貼り重ねて作られる工芸品ですが、これは、当地に生きた武士たちの手内職として受け継がれ、のち、市井の人びとに広まったものだと言います。つまり、土地と人と素材が不可分の関係にある手仕事なのです…

Have you ever heard of kabazaiku, the traditional craft handed down in the Kakunodate area in Akita Prefecture known for its samurai residences? kabazaiku uses a special technique of pasting many layers of bark from wild cherry trees sourced locally. This technique was passed down as a domestic craft by the samurai warriors who lived in the area, and later spread to the general populace. In other words, kabazaiku is a craft in which the location, people and materials are inseparably linked.

The house was built as a second home on a hill overlooking the Yatsugatake Mountain in the Southern Alps.
Twenty-eight years after its completion, it is still loved by the family of the client’s son.
We look back on this masterpiece with photos that captured its building process within spectacular winter scenery.

【Design｜小鹿田焼のモダンな加飾 Modern embellishment of Onta ware】
・
「民藝」という言葉は、昭和初期に「民衆的工芸」の略語として作られた造語で、（美術工芸品ではなく）日常で使われる雑多な器物に飾らない美を見出そうという「民藝運動」とともに生まれました。
この運動の創始者であった思想家・柳宗悦（1889-1961）は、盟友である陶芸家たちとともに全国各地を回り、民藝というカテゴリに属する手仕事を発掘していきました。
そうして見つけたやきものの産地のひとつが、大分県の山間部にある日田の皿山。
それまで「日田もの」と呼ばれていた当地のやきものは、柳の訪問の後、彼が提案した「小鹿田焼（おんたやき）」という呼び名で、全国のやきもの好きに知られるようになりました。

The term Mingei was coined in the early Showa period as an abbreviation for minsyū teki kōgei (folk crafts). It was born within the Mingei movement (Japanese Folk Craft Movement), which sought to find unadorned beauty in miscellaneous everyday vessels, rather than established artistic crafts.
The founder of the movement, the philosopher Sōetsu YANAGI (1889-1961), travelled around the country with his allies, the potters, to discover handicrafts that belonged under the Mingei classification.
One of the pottery producing districts they identified was Sarayama in Hita City, a mountainous area in Ōita Prefecture.
The local pottery, which until then had been called “Hita mono,” became known to pottery lovers throughout the country by the name “Onta yaki (Onta ware),” which YANAGI proposed after his visit.

【Design｜ノスタルジーを宿す造形 A form of nostalgia】

「懐かしい」という言葉を辞書で引くと、「（過去に自分が接したものに）心が引かれて慕わしい」と書かれています。ただ実際には、自分が接したことや経験したことがないものであっても、懐かしさを感じることがあるのでは？

If you look up the word “nostalgic” in the dictionary, you will find that it means “being drawn to and yearning for something with which one had contact in the past”.
In reality, however, even if it is something you have never come into contact with or experienced in the past, you may still find it nostalgic.

都市に建つ、コンクリート壁式造2階建ての住宅。
隣接道路側に主庭、住空間を挟んだ敷地奥に二つの庭を配した。
内密な空間をつくりつつ、開口部に映る緑やテラスからの眺め、多様な景色を楽しむ構成としている。

Two storey urban house, made in a box frame-type reinforced concrete construction.
The main garden is situated by the adjoining road, and two other gardens are placed at the back of the site sandwiching the living space.
While achieving a private space, the design enjoys the greenery reflecting on theopening section, a view from the terrace, and seasonal landscapes.

【Design｜現代に甦る象嵌のうつわ Inlaid vessels revived in the modern age】

蓋物の淡い絵柄は筆で描いたようにも見えますが、こちらは絵付けではなく「象嵌（ぞうがん）」という伝統技法で加飾されたもの。器体の表面を刃物で彫り（象り）、その凹んだ部分に別の土を嵌め込んで絵柄を表現しています...

the pale pattern on the ceramic with a lid in the image appears to have been painted with a brush, but this is not painted on. This was decorated with a traditional technique called zōgan (inlaying).
The surface of the vessel is carved with a blade, and another piece of clay is inlaid into the concave area to create the design...

『Design｜宇陀紙 Uda washi paper』

山紫水明の眺めが広がる奈良県吉野郡、国栖と呼ばれる地域では、古くから和紙作りが盛んでした。そのはじまりは、大海人皇子（天武天皇）が壬申の乱（672年）にこの地で挙兵したとき、里人に紙漉きと養蚕を教えたことからと伝えられています。吉野川の清流と峰から吹き下ろす風、この地で採れた楮と白土、まさに風土を漉き込んだきめ細やかで丈夫な手漉和紙は「宇陀紙」と呼ばれ、宝物を守る表具の中でも要となる総裏紙に用いられます...

・
敷地に茂る木々に囲まれて佇む、4人家族の住まい。
「敷地に建物を建てて庭をつくる」のではなく、森の中に建物を配置するという発想での計画。
室内と外部との関係を考え抜いた開口計画や空間構成で、ここにしかない庭のあり方を実現している。

HoHome to a family of four, surrounded by trees in the site.
It has been planned based on the idea of “arranging buildings within a forest”, rather than “making a building and garden in a site”.
The garden is unique to the site.
It is realised by the opening sections and spatial structures, which were designed based oncontemplation of the relationship between interior and exterior spaces.
