GlobeTrotters Put empathy into action. We produce another empathy by sharing what makes us feel empathy Why do we regard mindset as important? We want to realize it.

We think there are more social issues around the world that would be solved if they had a better mindset than they think. We also think the mindset is not just spiritualism. That can lead to specific outcomes in different problems. The following are words that we found in a temple in Japan and that we have been thinking were by a Japanese monk until recently. But, actually, they seemed to have bee

n written by an American philosopher William James (1842-1910). Regardless of who wrote them, we have been cherishing the words that work across space and time. Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny.

I am neither a Christian, Muslim, nor Buddhist. That isnโ€™t to say I am an atheist, but I have beliefs and look up to religious attitudes such as attending church services.
In spite of the fact that I used to go to church with respect, why am I not a believer?
This is what I think about religion. I hope this will work for everybody, whether you are a believer or not.

The church used to be far from my life. In my childhood, my society terribly discriminated against religion and believers.

You are told to ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด when you are young. As you grow up, you become stronger mentally and financially.
How strong you become depends on a person. Where you start your lives differs by each person. Some are born into wealthy families. Others are not. How much effort you make also depends on a person.
Strength is what is The person that looks strong to you can look weak to some people.

The other day, I drank coffee brewed with local beans at a cafรฉ in Jinja, Uganda. It was the first time I had taken authentic coffee in Uganda, though I had stayed in Kampala for one and a half months a year back.
There was a reason why I took coffee this day. There were posters all over inside walls of the cafe which read the effect that your coffee purchase helps locals. [fig1] I had seen similar phrases several times in developed countries, but this time I felt a little bit different to before as I was supposed to stay with a local family.

Uganda, which is located in the tropical zone, is the country which the equator runs through. Though you might feel a bit surprised, it is a little chilly in the morning and at night. This is due to the elevation. The climate conditions of Uganda are suitable for coffee trees. [fig2] As a matter of fact, we can see coffee trees grow naturally anywhere here in Jinja, but I didnโ€™t know locals hardly take coffee.

What surprised me more was the purchase price for coffee berries. The purchase price means the price at which brokers buy coffee berries from farmers. It was about 500 Ugandan shillings per kilogram. If you convert Ugandan shillings into us dollars in accordance with dollar-Ugandan shilling exchange rate of January 7th, it is about ๐Ÿฌ.

According to MEITTA(*1), a fully-grown coffee plant of 2-3 meters bears around 5-8 kilograms of coffee berries per year. The number of coffee trees each farmer owns is largely several dozens. There are several chances a year to pick coffee berries. How red the berries are let us know the time to pick them. [fig3] The reddish coffee berries are carried by brokers to a local factory that dries or roasts them.

Now I am at the Source of Nile in the second largest city Jinja in Uganda. (fig1) This is one of the sources of the River Nile. There are two kinds of water in Uganda which flow into the River Nile: the water of Lake Victoria and the water from the underwater springs at the joint part of Lake Victoria and the River Nile. (fig2) If I remember correctly, a tour guide told me that Lake Victoria-to-the underwater spring ratio is about 7 to 3.

The River Nile reminds me of a controversial Ethiopian dam. (fig3) The dam constructed in the upper course of the Nile brings about an issue in the lower course. Sudan and Egypt fear the dam could reduce their share of Nile waters.

Back in ancient times, there used to be annual flooding of the Nile. It was Egypt where the Nile flooded. But what brought about the natural disaster had occurred in a different place. It was Ethiopia around 1,400 miles away from Egypt. The monsoon over Ethiopian Plateau had caused heavy rain.
When it rains heavily in the upper course of a river, it is in the lower course that suffers greater damage. It is not a place that caused a problem.

Lake Victoria is located in the uppermost course of the Nile and is the world's second-largest water lake facing three countries: Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. There is hygiene and water pollution occurring. I heard this was due to daily life water, plastic bottles, and something like that. (fig4,5,6)

The water quality problem could someday affect not only the areas around Lake Victoria but also the areas in the lower course of the Nile. The problem of the world's longest river which runs through 11 countries will have a huge impact. (fig7)

However, the problem won't easily progress toward resolution because the people who sow the seeds of the problem differ from those who suffer from it.

The more downstream the polluted water in the upper course travels, the wider the area of influence spreads.

I met vegetarians from the West in the countries surrounding Lake Victoria. It is said that there are several reasons they become a vegetarian: environmental concerns, animal welfare, health, and belief. The reason depends on the person.

Further evolved social movement called veganism also appeared. The number of restaurants that overwhelmingly have a vegetarian or vegan menu has increased. Those are movements in the lower course of a river. What we have to do right now is to get rid of the root causes that made them decide to become a vegetarian or vegan.

The situation where we are discounting root sources applies to a virtual world.

The wrong information and the arbitrarily operated information easily get to go viral with social networking service. Each SNS platform should take measures to prevent that, but it won't be easy to eliminate all that has gone viral. It will be impossible to eliminate them completely unless they are dealt with at the place where they are first produced before they spread.

So the most effective and productive measures are to get rid of what is behind the false information. Those who live in the upper course of the information river must know the length of the river is way longer than the Nile. The extent of the impact is way more than 11 countries or 300 million people in the Nile Basin.

The flooding of the Nile shows heavy rains in the upper course give a bad influence on the lower course. And then, the lower the disaster-affected area is, the greater the influence of the disaster is.
We shouldn't accept the reality that is far from ideal in comparison with the fact that the people living in lower areas than us suffer more terribly, but we have a tendency to compare in order to escape from suffering. So the idea easily permeates all the people from the upper stream to the downstream. The people in the lowest course of a river hardly raise their voices because they are usually marginalized and are often supported by those in the upper course.

What is important for us is to know the fundamental principle of problem-solving and the characteristics of our mindset.

Your mindset builds your destiny.
The future of our society is a bunch of your destinies.
Your mindset builds a society's future.

Players seriously playing and whistles that were blown with proper timing made spectaters feel pleasant. We all gradually got to feel a sense of unity among players, judges, and spectaters. The chief judge was like an orchestra conductor.

The humility that makes it possible to see a fact as it is makes us wiser.
Creatures with wisdom survive.
The survivors seem to be strong.
As a matter of fact, they were sure to be strong, but that is a result, not a cause.
What brought about strength is humility.

What I felt in Tanzania is similar to the humility.

One month ago, we mentioned the situation of Tanzanian education and the significance of non-fee-charging schools. Since then, we had been engaged in supporting teaching as a volunteer for a month. During the stay, we had opportunities to talk with teachers in a free school and a public school, which led to recognizing

This is a Tanzanian school where public school children gather after school and that an NGO provides non-fee-charging classes. This is because there are many children in inadequate education as the ratio of teachers to students in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania is one hundred. But, children here don't always have high motivation. We guess that could be related to being non-fee-charging. We will want to mention that to you in another video.

To get back to what we were saying, as soon as we had told the children to study harder if they wanted to pull themselves out of poverty, they changed their expression and their attitude. They looked like another person. It is not that threat is necessary. What we want to say is that it is important to tell them facts, get them to get to recognize where they are, and give them opportunities to alter their point of view. It is meaningless to focus on just providing classes that don't bore children. We don't deny all of them. But, it is certain that that is not the real deal.

Facts might not be as beautiful as you expected like movies. That must be true in many cases. Understanding facts is sure not to be easy like drawing a straight line between good and evil. That must be a zigzag and ragged line. What matters is that the future is only an extension of the line which connects the past and the present. A starting point should be always in the past or facts. That is like the reflection of what was done and respect for it. Children getting to recognize facts leads to changing their expression. Without it, they won't change. They will change their expressions, only if they get to know how ragged the path that they follow is. And then, when they get to recognize the necessity to deal with the difficulty, everything from their attitude to their habit will start changing. Without the recognition, the change never happens. What they have studied and learned only works on an answer sheet on which there is a beautiful solution.

We can't help feeling that fundamentally, education is supposed to be like that: the place to properly tell students not temporary techniques but facts.Escaping from the reality such as information operations or filter bubbles will collapse a society. Needless to say, what supports the bottom of all transactions is trust. Its instability makes all transactions stagnant. The trust can never be built from scratch at the moment. You can gradually get closer to trust only when you reflect on each action you took.
The continuity is the father of trust. The future is only an extension of the line which connects the past and the trust.

Lastly, let me introduce the words that I have been cherishing.

Sow a thought, reap an action.
Sow an action, reap a habit.
Sow a habit, reap a character.
Sow a character, reap a destiny.

Now we are taking part in an education program in the Samaritan Education Centre and Nursery school that the Samaritan Volunteers NGO runs on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work on getting rid of an immediate cause of inadequate education that contributes to cycle of poverty.

- Background-
Let us explain the background. (Fig.1)
There is a serious educational problem in Tanzania. Many children can't get an adequate education. There are two main reasons for this.

One reason is that there are children who canโ€™t go to primary school because requirements to enter primary school arenโ€™t met. The main requirement that is not met is about a birth certificate. The parents don't hold a birth certificate that they should have originally got when their baby was born. In addition to that, they tend to discount the need. But, actually, it is not easy for the gov to issue the certificate years after it was born. Sometimes it takes a few years.

The other is due to the scarcity of teachers. The ratio of teachers to students is 1 to 100. This number is crucial to school age children.

The inadequate education produced by the above two produces another parent who don't hold a birth certificate and another children who can't go to primary school. The inadequate education also contributes to poverty. That leads to serious crimes and low income. Serious crimes and low income are interrelated and produce bad cycle of poverty of illiteracy.

Moreover, man-before-women ideology causes the increase of the number of poor single mother households. And then, for single mothers, major home appliances being unintroduced makes it more difficult to earn money. Because the women have to spend most of their time on cooking, doing the laundry, cleaning, and the like.

The chart(Fig.2) tells us that the approach of the Samaritan Volunteers NGO is very meaningful.

-A challenge for the future-
What we feel so far is a challenge for the future is to enlarge the solution. The number of children in their school is less than 100. But, there are be way more children that apparently needs the Samaritan Volunteers NGO. When potential needs are included, the number must skyrocket. But, they don't even have enough resource to give classes for less than 100 children. They have been filling in the gap by volunteers.

Our understanding is based on comments of local people that we actually met in Africa. This is because we put importance on what locals think or what we actually hear and see.
So it is not exhaustive and might be different from your understanding. Feel free to leave a comment.

Many countries must have habits of getting a meal started with words of gratitude.
The words children spoke loudly in a nursery school the Samaritan Volunteers NGO runs:
"Thank you, God, for this breakfast.
Now I'm going to eat.
Thank you, aunt.
Thank you, teacher.
Thank you, mummy.
Thank you, daddy.
Amen."

Their cheerful voice reminded us that the voice expressing gratitude cannot be too loud.
And then the following words crossed our minds.

For good times and bad times, keep your language positive.
Your words build your character.

This is because you think with your brain, choose words, and speak them and the opposite is true. You recognize your own words with your ears, and they give your brain stimuli. The words you speak are the most crucial element to stimulate your brain.

Our thoughts we put on the logo

Walk with our own feet, See it with our own eyes, and Feel it as it is.

The internet enables us to get access to information from all over the world, while infobesity makes us feel even more difficulties in knowing what is actually going on. This is because the enormous volume of information not only easily goes viral but also includes information that deliberately makes people lean left or right. Anyone can't make the right decision unless they know the facts. So we do want to share things that we have seen with our own eyes even if they are just a part of the infobesity.

And then, our life that gets more comfortable as technology gets more advanced has unknowingly induced us to be more dependent on something than necessary, while the joy of walking with our own feet and seeing it with our own eyes has been overlooked. In my childhood, I would explore for beetles and stag beetles the places that weren't on the map and didn't even have trails. The joy of catching them with my own hands taught me what the joy of life was. It was a meaningful time regardless of whether I could catch
them or not. As a matter of fact, I would keep looking for the black diamonds enjoying the wonderful time even when the days when I couldn't catch any ones continued in a row.
