Our Story
Japan isn't all cherry blossoms, robots, geisha, and anime adepts. All exist, some more unfortunately than others, but Japan is much more than just these trivialities. Indeed, the Land of the Rising Sun can be deadly serious in regards to many if not all of its offerings.
Most notable of Japan's "hidden" assets, at least to the contributors of this blog, is the vast breadth of the musical underground here. Antithetical to the image of a reticent, habitually polite populace that is frequently ascribed to the nation, there is a long, long list of bands that possess a commitment to making the most extreme sounds this side of Hell.
Black, Death, Doom, Grind, Hardcore, Psychedelic, Noise, and anything else you can think of, Japan absolutely has just the right aural poison you're looking for. However, many of these artists are difficult to track down. Kaala aims to rectify that. Our members are not only passionate about the scene, but also highly active members of the community. Tokyo's Black Death marauders Retch, video documentarians Visual Justice Films, event promoters Blood Rite Productions, professional photographers, and writers for The Japan Times all contribute to Kaala to not only expand extreme music palates, but to also offer a glimpse into the broader ecosystem of Japan's underground as a whole.
