Super excited. Naomi Osaka 大坂なおみ's documentary directed by Garrett Bradley just landed on Netflix. If you haven't seen it yet, I encourage you to see it. This docuseries depicts Naomi in a much more deep and intimate way than we have ever seen her before. Imago Machina coordinated all the parts shot in Japan and it was such a pleasure meeting Naomi whose candor, humbleness, and compassion as a human being adds to the kick ass tennis player that she is. Thank you Mariana Pisani Giles Khan Ai Hanadate Gaetano Nino Campolongo Mariel Lohninger for being part of the team.

Let’s face it - the first time I saw a shark while scuba diving in Australia - I freaked out. While shooting this episode of shark week we had to really get to know these creatures.

In 4 days we encountered 17 sharks and about 50 dolphins. It was amazing!

The episode we worked on will premiere on August 14th.

Alien Sharks: First Contact

Friday, August 14 at 8P

Mysterious and bizarre alien sharks lurk far beneath the waves in remarkably deep waters where researchers are on a quest to make first contact. Pursuing the elusive frilled shark, sleeper shark and cookie-cutter shark bring even more unexpected encounters.

Japan has 5 main islands which concentrate most of the population but in total it comprises of 6,852 islands. However only 430 are inhabited. Because the nation expands across 3,800 kilometers between its most northern and southern points the climate can range from subtropical in Okinawa to subarctic in Hokkaido. It’s really increíble! This here is Kumejima which is part of the Okinawa archipelago and has a total of 7,000 residents. It is incredibly pristine and has beautiful beaches.

Lets talk about the iconic Mount Fuji, this active volcano that makes its way into so many films
and shows produced in Japan.

Why? Because it says JAPAN.

There’s a reason why the famous artist Hokusai did a series called “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”.

He already knew you can depict it from so many points of views.

Fuji San, with a peak at 3,776 meters high, is only 100 KM from Tokyo. It’s been a pilgrimage site for centuries and considered one of Japan’s 3 sacred mountains.

We’ve climbed it a few times but it’s no fun being on top of it because you can’t see it. Photo by but it’s such a money shot you’ll find so many pix that are almost the same.

The other upside of filming in Tokyo is uncovering the radically modern and avant- garden aspects of this urban hub. Here we casted a group of fashionistas from Harajuku to join a reality show’s contestants in exploring one of the largest cities in the world. @ Tokyo, Japan

I look back at our life last year, all the beautiful places we visited, and it feels like a dream. How lucky we were to move across borders.

On this second visit to Ethiopia we met our amazing fixer who had plenty of moving stories to tell about his time growing up during the Ethiopian-Somali war on the “wrong” side of the border. He had been kidnapped as a child.

One of the most exciting aspects of our job is meeting real people with real stories. It’s about having the opportunity to connect at a human level no matter the cultural differences.

Our fixers are our deep guides into unknown and uncharted territories. Filming becomes an excuse to be in someone’s shoes for a day, to listen to their stories and to make a new friend.

This was in Addis Ababa, one is my favorite African cities not just because I love the food but because I feel drawn to the people.

We went crazy over shiro wat, chimaqee, and local coffee infused with the smell of rue.

Geishas, geikos, and maikos have historically kept their traditions a secret. Even though I think it’s no longer misunderstood, geishas are women that are highly skilled in Japanese arts and posses deep cultural knowledge. Usually they play instruments, conduct tea ceremonies and play games.

The geisha culture is still a mystery even to the Japanese. Many would never be able to afford being entertained or having tea with one of them.

Over the years, the demand for them has declined within Japan so these days more are choosing open up their traditions to tourists and foreign TV shows to survive and share their lives. Other traditionalists will never do this. On the contrary they shun the aggressive cameras of the tourists trying to capture their beauty. By and

One of our favorite parts of preparing for a shoot is location hunting. This is when you get the time to look for beautiful images in beautiful places and talk to people on the ground to hear more about their stories.

One of Imago Machina’s highlights in 2018 was to work on Season 2 of Ugly Delicious. We shot with David Chang and his crew for four days in Tokyo.

David used to live in the Japanese capital so he knows the city and all the yummy places pretty well. But one of the funniest locations was taking David Chang to a Japanese elementary school so he could eat together with the kids.

He had a long chat with the nutritionist about how to balance health with taste. He also loved how kids shared values around a meal. It was inspiring because his first child was born shortly after in March 2019.

Many of us have read about how kids in Japan serve their own meals and tidy after themselves after eating. It is as true and real as it looks. They are really taught to respect eating time, to hold silence, to concentrate on eating properly, and to make sure that it’s a true community event.

Have you watched Ugly Delicious Season 2 yet? If not, go watch it!

Dutch singer and television personality, Gordon Heuckeroth came to Japan in the fall of 2019 for the new show "Gordon and Patty, Looking for Eternal Youth".

Imago Machina served as their local fixers.

In "Gordon and Patty: Looking for Eternal Youth", produced by ITV Studios Netherlands, the flamboyant duo travels around the world and undergoes the most bizarre, extreme and laughable beauty and health rituals with one goal: to come back reborn. After a turbulent existence in showbiz country with many ups and downs in which Patty & Gordon often sought refuge in parties, drinking, eating, actually everything that God has forbidden, the two have finally seen the light. They have rigorously changed course and the duo is now healthier and more radiant than ever before.

Here, Gordon is rejuvenated while getting an electric shock facial acupuncture in Tokyo.
