An encore episode of the pod is now available on all popular podcast apps. Originally published in April 2024, my travel guide to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route provides everything you need to know about its history, what to expect, how the transports work and the best times to visit (along with when to avoid). Following on from this, I will also soon be republishing my travel guide to the alpine valley of Kamikochi. Both guides were first published under the old podcast name of Snow Country Stories Japan. I hope you enjoy!

In Episode 50 of the podcast I speak with Marcus Consolini. Marcus is the owner and general manager of Daimon Shuzo, a 200 year old sake brewery on the outskirts of Osaka; while also a board of the Minka Preservation Society, an organisation dedicated to the conservation of Japan’s heritage and historical homes. As a kominka-owner himself with experience renovating multiple historical properties including the brewery, Marcus is an ideal person to speak to about the process of acquiring and renovating kominka in Japan. Given that experience, rather than focus on an individual property, Marcus and I enter into a general conversation about the process, reality and challenges of renovating historical properties in Japan. Available Tuesday April 22nd on all popular podcasr apps.

Thank you to everyone who has already listened to Episode 49 of the pod, my chat with Kōei Ervin about Japan’s 1200km, 88 temple pilgrimage circuit – the Shikoku Henro. It’s proving to be one of the popular episodes I have yet published. In this final short clip, you’ll hear Kōei discuss some of the clothing people wear and items they carry, including the staff, while walking ‘the Henro’.

Episode 49 of the Outland Japan podcast is now available. In this episode I speak with Shingon Buddhist priest and Shugendo practitioner, Kōei Ervin about Japan’s 1200km, 88 temple pilgrimage circuit – the Shikoku Henro. As a tour guide with Shikoku Tours, Kōei accompanies guests along sections of “the Henro”. His knowledge of the Henro and Buddhism more broadly is self-evident and as a guide himself, Kōei constructs a compelling and entertaining narrative. We discuss the history of the Shikoku Henro and association with legendary Buddhist monk Kūkai, what to expect, when to walk, what to wear and accommodation, along with Kōei’s own story.

In Episode 49 of the podcast we travel to Shikoku to speak with Shingon Buddhist priest Kōei Ervin about the island’s 88 temple pilgrimage circuit – the Shikoku Henro. Measuring approximately 1200km / 745 miles, the Shikoku Henro circumambulates Japan’s fourth largest island. Dating back at least 1200 years, the trail is an amalgam of more ancient trails with the modern circuit we can experience today most commonly associated with the legendary Japanese Buddhist monk Kūkai, also known as Kōbō Daishi. In this short clip you’ll hear Kōei introducing “the Henro” including it’s association with Kūkai. Available now on all popular podcast apps.

Episode 48 of the Outland Japan podcast is now available. In this episode I speak with Vincent Ng, otherwise known as the 'Kyoto Insider'. As Kyoto Insider, Vince documents his life in rural Japan and in doing so, reveals a very different side of Kyoto and the realities of life in the countryside. Vince is actively involved in the revitalisation of his village, performing many roles and working to attract prospective migrants as a rural tourism and migration consultant. He’s a wonderful advocate for choosing life in the outlands while also conveying a realistic idea of what to expect – both the positives and negatives. Among the positives, access to food and hands on involvement in fishing, farming and hunting account for a lot of our chat. It’s a conversation that I hope piques your interest in discovering more of rural Japan, whether that’s for travel or as Vince says, to make the move permanent.

Thank you to everyone who has already listened to Episode 47 of the podcast. In this episode I speak with Rev. Dr. TK Nakagaki about the significance of the ‘sw****ka’ in Japan. Known as ‘manji’ in Japanese, the sw****ka is typically identified in the East as a Hindu-Buddhist symbol but is actually found across many cultures. Its form and associations vary however it is generally accepted that the sw****ka is a sun symbol, something you’ll hear Rev. Dr. Nakagaki discussing in this short clip.

Episode 47 of the Outland Japan podcast is now available. In this episode I speak with Rev. Dr. Nakagaki, an ordained priest in the Jodoshinshu tradition of Japanese Buddhism and author of the 2017 book 'The Buddhist Sw****ka and Hitler’s Cross: Rescuing a Symbol of Peace from the Forces of Hate'. Known as 'manji' in Japan, the sw****ka is commonly displayed on most, if not all, Buddhist temples along with many Shinto shrines. In keeping with its meaning in Buddhist and Hindu traditions, the sw****ka is a symbol of peace, light and represents the mind and teaching of the Buddha - yet most international visitors depart without ever gaining an understanding of its meaning in the Japanese Buddhist context. I hope this episode goes some way to addressing that. Available on all popular podcast apps.

The book presents a cross-cultural history of the 'sw****ka', a symbol of peace used by multiple Eastern religions, including Japanese Buddhism, and indigenous peoples but typically regarded as a hate symbol in the West. Known as 'manji' in Japan, the sw****ka is commonly displayed on Buddhist temples along with many Shinto shrines. In keeping with its meaning in Buddhist and Hindu traditions, the sw****ka is a symbol of peace, light and represents the mind and teaching of the Buddha. In this short clip you’ll hear Rev. How much snow have we had in Japan this season? According to friend.of the show,.Giampaolo Camplese, this much. A resident of Nukui in Iiyama, Giampaolo was my guest in Episode 22 of the podcast in which we discussed his acquisition and renovation of a 'kominka' (traditional farmhouse), his work as a furniture maker, former life as a musician and full-time gig shovelling snow.
