Episode 43 of the Outland Japan podcast is now available. In this episode, I speak with Lauren Scharf. Lauren and her husband live in a restored ‘kominka’ (traditional farmhouse / folkhouse) on the beautiful Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. Having restored the house with her husband, Lauren is also on the board of the Minka Preservation Society – an organisation dedicated to the conservation of Japan’s wonderful heritage and historic homes. Lauren was a wonderful guest whose enthusiasm for her own home is reflective of a motivated community of ‘kominka’ or ‘minka’ owners across Japan; a community she supports through her involvement in the Minka Preservation Society. For anyone interested in finding their own kominka in rural Japan, or perhaps you already have and are part of that enthusiastic community, then this episode will definitely be of interest!

Episode 42 of the podcast is now available. In this episode I speak with Dr. Caleb Swift Carter of Kyushu University about Japan's mountain religion / faith systems of 'Shugendo'. In exploring Shugendo with Dr. Carter, we return to Togakushi in discussion of his book 'A Path Into the Mountains: Shugendo and Mount Togakushi'. Mountains have long played a central role in Japan's cultural make up. We discuss what Shugendo is, who practices it and how, and the conceptualisation of mountains as mandalas. If you're not yet familiar with such principles, you just might find this episode revealing of an important aspect of Japanese tradition that continues to be practiced today. Thank you to everyone who has already listened to Episode 41 of the podcast – Smoke. Sulphur. Snow. Skiing Hokkaido’s Volcanoes with Chuck Olbery / Hokkaido Powder Guides. In this final short clip you’ll hear Chuck discuss skiing Hokkaido’s tallest mountain, Asahidake. Standing 2290m / 7516ft, Asahidake is an active volcano, known as “Kamui-mintara” (Playground of the Gods) in the native Ainu language. Though the last major eruption was in 1739, the large billowing fumaroles of the mountain attest to the fact that it remains very much alive.

Episode 41 of the Outland Japan podcast is now available. In this episode I speak with Chuck Olbery of Hokkaido Powder Guides. Originally from Australia, Chuck moved to Japan in the '90s and for the past 20 years has been operating backcountry / freeride tours across Hokkaido including on the island's most prominent volcanoes. In our chat we discuss a little of Chuck’s own story, why he chose to set up shop in Hokkaido and skiing the (mostly very active) volcanoes of Yotei, Tokachi, Asahidake and Rishiri.

https://www.outlandjapan.com/

Straddling the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is the world’s most seismically-active country while also home to many active volcanoes. Volcanoes have long played an important role in Japan’s history and cultural fabric, and for that reason, I see real value in experiences that take us into those living landscapes. Chuck advocates wonderfully that experience. Available on all popular podcast apps. 🔗 Link in bio.

The season is off and running in Nagano. Supreme conditions in Hakuba over the past two days with plenty more snow forecast over the next week. The resorts will start getting much busier from next week onwards but for those lucky enough to be in the region now, I recommend suiting up, setting up and hitting up Japan's resorts night now.

Known best for its outstanding snow, lack of crowds and cat skiing and snowboarding operation – regarded as the best in Japan – Iwanai Resort also has a growing reputation as an all-year-round destination. Located within the Hidaka Mountains, Mount Iwanai sits nearby the beautiful Shakotan Peninsula. ‘Shakotan Blue’ references the strikingly azure waters off the peninsula – a popular destination for sea kayaking and observing wildlife. On the land, the mountains afford plenty of hiking trails and mountain-biking while being Hokkaido, this area boasts some of Japan’s best seafood along with local festivals and experiences. In short, Iwanai has as much going on in green season as it does in winter. Something John and I discuss in the second half of Episode 40 – Iwanai, Hokkaido: Japan’s Best Cat Skiing & Snowboarding Mountain’ – available this Tuesday 3rd December.
