Have you ever took a random trip to an unmarked location and it somehow turned out to be the best travel memory?
Because that’s what happened during our visit to Kitakyushu, Fukuoka last month.
Meet Gondo-san, the owner of this mysterious unmarked wisteria garden that we took a chance on despite having initial doubts about its existence as all we had was a few tweets and a local news article.
He inherited this beautiful multi petal wisteria tree called Yaekokuryu (八重黒龍)from his father and has been tending to it with so much love and care judging from the massive size of one tree!
Every year when it blooms, tables are set underneath the tree for visitors to enjoy a BBQ session together.
The tree itself is around 85+ years old while Gondo-san is 79 years old this year; despite being alone in his advance age, he finds joy in tending to his little garden which has many other seasonal plants too and is ever so eager to show visitors his latest work 🥹
What’s surprising is that there isn’t any entry or donation fee, all Gondo-san ask for in return is a photo for his photo album.
That is his greatest treasure; a massive album filled with memories collected over the years. Each photo is filled with so much genuine emotion that you can’t help tearing up while going through it (I know I did 😭) because these are the simple things in life we often take for granted - Human connection.
In this fast paced world, we hardly form deep and meaningful connections anymore.
This visit truly reminded me of a time when life was not complicated.
Maybe it’s a sign to move to the countryside and start a slow yet fulfilling life like Gondo-san 😌
The universe does works in mysterious ways, don’t you agree?
If you are ever in Fukuoka, please drop by Gondo-san’s humble garden🪴

This year was spent revisiting old spots that I’ve not touched for 2-3 years and it’s still as beautiful as I remembered.

Can you keep a secret?🤫
Everywhere else in Kyoto might be bare right now except for this secret garden located on the northern side of town which opens its doors to the public only once a year during a specific viewing period. Due to its slightly cooler temperatures and late blooming species, making it the perfect Sakura finale for the season.
The Danna knows I love Sakura a lot that he brought me here 2 years ago as a surprise 🥹 and this year we are back again with good weather!
You’ll find mostly locals here enjoying the view with their Hanami bento which is refreshing away from major tourists crowds as most would have left after the peak period.
🌸 SAKURA CONDITION: Reached its peak on 4/12/24
Entry fee : ~1800¥ (adult) prices varies according to blooming conditions
Sakura Matsuri Dates: 3/23~ 4/25/24*
*Dates changes every year
📝 IMPORTANT NOTICE (from official website)
🌸 No commercial photoshoots (bridal/ family / etc) here unless permission is obtained directly
🌸 Tripod, monopods, drones are not allowed
🌸 No pets allowed
🌸 Outside food is not allowed but you can buy food inside or make an advance reservation for their bento
🌸 Parking is available and to respect the neighborhood, please do not come by large private cars/ vans/ micro buses. Taxi drop off and pick up, local bus is recommended.

Arrived to find you just missed Kyoto’s Sakura by 3 days?
This is a sign for you to hop back on that train and take a side trip to Hokuriku region because places like;
🌸 Kanazawa Castle Park, Kanazawa (🚅1hr 50mins)
🌸 Toyama Castle Park, Toyama (🚅2hrs)
🌸 Takada Castle Park, Niigata (🚅 3hr 30 mins)
Has reached its peak as of 4/10 ~ 4/11 and best to enjoy them this weekend before they start shedding!
All 3 spots are accessible from Kyoto station via the new extended Shinkansen line departing from Tsuruga station.
Technically you can visit all 3 spots in 1 day if you take the earliest train but I would recommend staying at least 1 night😆

The great Buddha hall in Japan that resembles the hall of faces in Game of Thrones.
Geek reference aside, though there are many great Buddha statues here in Japan; The one in Katsuyama deserves a highlight because it’s said to be tallest Daibutsu with the height of 17m (taller than Nara’s).
Surrounding are walls of enshrined stone Buddhas symmetrically lined creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
If you are planning to visit the Fukui prefectural dinosaur museum, don’t miss this spot because it’s in the same area. And yes, it does snow even in March!
📝IMPORTANT NOTE
⚠️ This is a place of worship, keep your voices down and be respectful in general
⚠️ You can also get a panoramic view of the temple grounds from the 5 storied pagoda but it may close due to weather conditions

Years of admiring this place behind the screen, I’m glad to have finally made a visit and I would definitely love to be back again when the Sakura trees are blooming. I heard they have a special numbering system for it too because it gets super crowded.
It’s already crowded off-season, I can’t imagine during peak 😱 has anyone here visited during Sakura season?
