Sharing to you the Facebook Live I did on this day in 2024. This was the my first attempt at doing voice over on my videos. Very rare, I would say. I went out of my condo and stayed in the balcony while there’s heavy snow, trembling and doing Live until my hands could no longer hold my phone.21 days left before the 2025 Sapporo Snow Festival!! So excited to see my favorite city abuzz with millions of tourists, both domestic and overseas. A total of 2.39 million visitors flocked the festival from February 4 to 11 last year.

POPULAR BIRCH TREES IN BIEI NO MORE 🌲🍀😭
On January 14th, it was discovered that a row of birch trees popular with tourists in Biei Town, Hokkaido, had been cut down. The reason for this was apparently due to issues such as overtourism, where tourists crowd together and obstruct traffic.

In recent years, this area has been hit by a problem of "overtourism," with tourists taking photos blocking the road and trespassing on fields without permission, having a negative impact on the lives of local residents.

Yesterday was the start of classes for the third term here in Japan. But I had no class since there was an opening ceremony during the first period and exams after. Everyone was in the school gymnasium from 9:00am to 9:30am. As usual, students carried their own chairs from their respective homeroom classes. The same orderliness, diligence, cleanliness, punctuality, and formality the Japanese are known for. For a while I kept on thinking how can they achieve this, especially on being time conscious.

One important factor is the speech. Here, speeches are limited to 3-5 minutes. They read from their prepared scripts. No impromptu or ad libs. Everything is in Japanese. No need to use highfalutin words or idioms in the target language just to impress the audience. Where I’ve come from, some speeches can last for an hour. Others, especially the higher ups, or worse, the politicians, talk endlessly never minding if the audience gets bored and hungry. I also noticed a while ago that only the principal and the vice principal took a seat on the sides. All teachers just stood up, sometimes walking silently monitoring their homeroom students. When a student slouched or fell asleep, the teacher approached them and gently tapped their backs. The ceremony was very simple. At 9:30, the program was finished. On the dot.

Students didn’t have afternoon classes. After taking school lunch (kyushoku) at 12:45pm, they cleaned their dishes including the classrooms. The assigned groups cleaned the hallways, dishwashing areas, toilets, and other important areas of the school. They left the campus by 1:30; teachers remained.

The big window curtains in the faculty office were replaced. Since we don’t have a janitor, we did it ourselves. It’s so fun to see all teachers in formal suits remove the shoes and climb the railings. The vice principal took the initiative to look for a ladder. Both male and female, young and old, heads and subordinates, took part. In a few minutes, the task was done and our office now looks clean.

Talk about responsibility, accountability, and teamwork.

STRONGEST COLD WAVE OF THE SEASON

Heavy snow and blizzards hit the Japanese archipelago. Due to the influence of winter atmospheric pressure patterns and strong cold air above, heavy snow will fall from January 9th to January 10th, mainly on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu, not only along the mountains but also on the plains.

A heavy snow warning has been issued for Aomori Prefecture, and snowfall exceeded 4 meters on January 2nd in Sukayu in the Hakkoda mountain range in Aomori Prefecture, and in some places in Tohoku, snowfall has reached nearly 2 meters.

The amount of snow that fell in the 24 hours up to 5:00 a.m. on January 9th was:
Shirakawa Village, Gifu Prefecture: 50 cm
Nishiaizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture: 48 cm
Morimon, Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture: 45 cm.

As the cold air flows into Western Japan, snow will accumulate even in Shikoku and Kyushu, which do not usually get much snow.
The amount of snow expected to fall in the 24 hours up to the morning of January 10th is as follows:
80cm in Niigata Prefecture,
70cm in Tohoku, Hokuriku, and Gifu Prefectures,
60cm in Hokkaido and Chugoku,
50cm in Kinki,
40cm in Nagano and Yamaguchi Prefectures,
30cm in northern Kanto,
30cm in Shikoku,
10cm in northern Kyushu.

In addition, very strong winds will blow from the sea on the Sea of Japan side of northern and western Japan, causing blizzards and reducing visibility.
The maximum instantaneous wind speed expected through January 10th is 30 to 35 meters per second.

New Year (shogatsu) is one of the most important holidays in Japan. It has been a tradition for people to go to shrines to pray in the beginning of a new year, and it's called "hatsumode." They visit the shrine or temple on the first, second or third day to make wishes for the New Year.

The most popular and biggest "hatsumode" place in the northernmost prefecture is the Hokkaido Shrine located inside Maruyama Park in Sapporo City. It attracts several million people during the said three days, both Shinto believers and tourists.

As a foreigner living in this dynamic highly-urbanized city that promotes multicultural coexistence, I'm so happy to be given this opportunity to witness this kind of festivities. There is so much to be learned about the Japanese culture.
