Nerikiri (練り切りfor New Year
(wagashi)

The Japanese are masters at turning food into art and nerikiri is a perfect example.

A star of omotenashi (Japanese hospitality,) Nerikiri is served at Japanese tea ceremonies. They are made with white bean paste and a thickener (such as yam or flour,) carefully molded into seasonal flowers—plums and hydrangea for example—or other beautiful, intricate, and typically seasonal designs. Introduced during the late Edo period (1800s CE,) Nerikiri is an exquisite work of art that highlights the culinary skills of wagashi artisans.

Kagami-mochi

It is made up of two white rice cakes, larger one and smaller one, stacked on top of each other, with an orange-colored fruit called "daidai" on the very top. This is a Japanese traditional New Year's decoration called "kagami-mochi," which translates to a "mirror rice cake." Mochi has a round shape, similar to that of a mirror. In Japanese culture, a mirror is more than just an object that reflects whatever is in front of it, it also appears in local folklore and is one of the three sacred treasures, along with a sword and jewel.

Kagami-mochi is not only visually appealing, but it also acts as a "yorishiro" for the Japanese New Year god "Toshigami." In Shinto religion, a "yorishiro" is an object that summons gods. At the same time, kagami-mochi also serves as an offering to the New Year god. On January 11, the Japanese traditional custom of opening a kagami-mochi, known as "kagami biraki," takes place.
A knife is not used to open this Japanese New Year's decoration and it is broken with a mallet or with one's bare hands. Because the custom takes place in January, the kagami-mochi is already dry, allowing it to be "broken." It is eventually cooked and consumed.

Shimekazari (注連飾り

New Year’s wreath made with a twisted straw rope, paper decorations and tangerines. These are hung above doors to invite and welcome the New Year god deities of good fortune and to ward off evil spirits.
It is available in a variety of shapes and sizes.

The shime-kazari i got (pictured) is made of a rope twisted into a round shape that resembles a Christmas wreath.

These decorations are said to be temporary dwelling places of kami and are usually brought to shrines to be burned at a special ceremony after January 15th.

Happy New Year! 🥳
Here’s our osechi ryori that I got from the supermarket. Osechis are too expensive so either I make my own and this year, I bought from the nearby supermarket.

Osechi-ryōri (御節料理, お節料理 or おせち) are the special traditional cuisine Japanese people eat at New Year, especially the first three days of January. It is eaten to pray for a bountiful harvest, excellent health, prosperity of descendants and for the safety of one’s family’s throughout the year.

The origin dates back to the old calendar from China. In the Heian period (794-1185), people celebrated sekku or division of seasons. Annual events were formalized at the imperial court, and a banquet called "New Year's Day Sechie (meeting on seasonal turning point)” was held among the nobility, where the sumptuous meal was called osechiku. This culture spread to the common people during the Edo period (1603-1867) and the word evolved as osechi. The stacked style became common from the late Edo to Meiji periods (1868-1912)
Osechi are easily recognizable by their special boxes called jūbako (重箱), which resemble bentō boxes. Like bentō boxes, jūbako are often kept stacked before and after use.

A colorful autumn world 🌎 that dates back to Heian period in Kyoto Arashiyama’s dyeing studio.
This is a must visit for autumn foliage viewing which is at its peak until early December.

It overlooks the Oi River, which is said to have been one of the settings for the early 11th century novel "The Tale of Genji." The 150-year-old wooden building used to be a restaurant with an attached inn, and is known as the place where the late Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata penned his novel "Yama no oto" ("The Sound of the Mountain").

Dyeing artist Yusai Okuda, designed the structure's striking round windows, harnessing the aesthetic sense he has nurtured through his work.

Make sure to check this studio when you’re around Kyoto for a full autumn 🍂 experience.

One of my favorite kindergarten schools.
This is a typical nursery/kindergarten classroom in Japan. 🇯🇵

Yōchien (幼稚園), known as preschool or kindergarten in English, is an educational institution in Japan for children ages 3 to 5, helping prepare them for elementary school.
Elementary or primary school starts at Grade 1 when children are 6 years old. Before then, they have the option of attending a yōchien, which is considered both preschool and kindergarten.
Kindergarten falls under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education (MEXT) and its purpose is to prepare children for first grade and beyond. This is done through academics, English classes, and music/physical education classes and standards set by MEXT.
