A Japan Airlines Co. passenger jet collided with a Japan Coast Guard plane at Tokyo's Haneda airport Tuesday, causing both aircraft to catch fire and killing five coast guard members, while all 379 on board the commercial flight escaped without life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the accident is not yet known.

A massive earthquake has struck Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan. A tsunami warning has been issued for Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa prefectures of the Japan Sea side of the country. People in these area must evacuate immediately.

IKOMA, Nara -- A river running through this western Japan city turned a bright green color on July 5, sparking tests that found traces of a bath coloring agent.

The change in color occurred along several kilometers of the Tatsuta River, which runs through Ikoma's Yamasakicho district and other areas. Water quality tests did not detect any poisonous substances and no dead fish were found, but the city called for people to temporarily refrain from drawing water from the river for agricultural use.

According to the municipal government, a resident reported the change in color at about 5 a.m. on July 5. The river flows from a branch upstream, and there were traces of a red powder having been dumped in the river.

Later tests by the Nara Prefectural Government confirmed that the water contained fluorescein sodium, a coloring agent used in bath additives and other products.

According to Hidetoshi Saitoh, a professor at Nagaoka University of Technology who is familiar with chemical substances, fluorescein sodium is used in bath salts, highlighters and other everyday items. It is originally a red powder, but turns a fluorescent green when dissolved in water. It is artificially synthesized and is not harmful to the human body or other living organisms.

The substance is also used as a distress marker at sea when someone is cast overboard, such as during shipwrecks. Saitoh, who is also a Society of Water Rescue and Survival Research board member, says he often uses it when investigating water accidents to determine the flow of rivers and the sea.

"With about one spoonful of it, you can see the flow about 100 meters ahead," he said. "I'm guessing about one bucket of it was used this time."

Fluorescein sodium can be bought by anyone online, and no qualifications are needed to handle it. Saitoh commented, "If an excessive amount were used, it could have some effect. I'm worried that others could mimic this."

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's son will resign as his aide, the premier said on Monday, after photos of the son and other relatives apparently pretending to hold a news conference at the official residence sparked an uproar.

Kishida told reporters that Shotaro Kishida would step down as his secretary from Thursday, saying the change was due to "inappropriate" behaviour at the official residence.

A weekly magazine last week published photos of the younger Kishida and relatives apparently pretending to hold a news conference at the podium where the prime minister usually stands.

"His behaviour at a public space was inappropriate as someone who is in an official position as political aide. I've decided to replace him for accountability," Kishida said.

The revelations come at an inopportune time for Kishida, who had gained a boost in popularity with the recent Group of Seven (G7) summit in Hiroshima, and were widely criticised by the opposition.

The frozen dessert, called byakuya – “white night” in Japanese – is currently fetching 880,000 yen ($6,380) for a serving, officially making it the most expensive ice cream in the world, according to Guinness World Records.

Japanese ice cream brand Cellato calls white night a gelato on its website, and the name is a hint to its Italian origins.

Sourced exclusively from Alba – home to what many consider the best white truffles in Italy – that ingredient alone could rake in as much as two million yen ($14,500) per kilogram, said an article published on the Guinness World Records website last week.

The ice cream is topped off by an edible gold leaf, two types of cheese and “Sakekasu,” a paste-like ingredient derived from the process of sake-making.

“It took us over 1.5 years to develop, with a lot of trials and errors to get the taste right,” a representative from the company told Guinness World Records earlier.

For that, it brought in Tadayoshi Yamada, the head chef at RiVi, an Osaka-based restaurant known for its French-Japanese fusion cuisine, to steer the project, according to Guinness World Records.

The desert is available for sale in Japan and is shipped directly to consumers, according to Cellato’s website.
