UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, “Hakata Gion Yamakasa" Nagaregaki

Nagaregaki, one of the main events of the 15 days Hakata Gion Yamakasa Matsuri(Festival) held on July 10, 2023

The Hakata-Gion-Yamakasa, also Yamakasa for short, is a festival held in the quarter Hakata of Fukuoka, Japan. It is held during the first half of July and is centered aroung festive, richly decorated Handbarrows, that are on display or carried through the city. These Hanbarrows, called Yamakasa, are dedicated to the three shintoistic patron gods of Hakata and are beautiful to look at. The seven districts of Hakata race each other along a set route each year as a part of the festivals main event, the Oiyama.

Nagaregaki, where the floats are carried around their respective districts. Finally, the Kakiyama begin to be shown around on foot. This is a kind of warm up for each district as they first get to get a feel for the Kakiyama they will have to carry for the main event!

The outfit, traditionally worn during the carrying of the Kakiyama, is called Mizu-happi, which means “Water vest”. There is also the Naga-happi, which is very similar to the water vest, exept that it includes a pair of trousers and a longer Yukata vest.
Both vests are only worn by participants of the Yamkasa, the water vest when carrying the Kakiyama, the long vest for any other occasions around the festivities.

It takes over 30 men to carry the Kakiyama. During the run they can switch with others, who are running along to regain their strength. A lot of younger and older men who can’t carry the Kakiyama also run along side. And those who can’t run along often wait aside the route the men are going to take.

On this day the Yamakasa finally begin to move. This day marks the change from the stillness of the decorative Kazariyama to the activity of the Kakiyama. Each district takes different routes through their respective neighborhood.
