The UNHCR has expressed cautious optimism about recent political developments in Syria and their potential impact on the voluntary return of refugees displaced since the civil erupted in 2011. With millions of Syrians uprooted, the crisis remains one of the largest displacement crises in modern history.

Maria Stavropoulou, the newly appointed UNHCR Representative to Jordan, said during a recent interview with The Jordan Times that it is « too early to determine the long-term implications of this political shift. “It is very soon to know how the situation will develop there [in Syria].”

Perched on Jabal al-Qala’a, the Amman Citadel has witnessed Amman’s transformation from the Ammonite capital of Rabbath-Ammon to the Hellenistic city of Philadelphia and later an important Islamic hub. Key structures include the Roman Temple of Hercules, built during Emperor Marcus Aurelius’ reign; the remains of a 5th-century Byzantine basilica; and the 8th-century Umayyad Palace, showcasing early Islamic architecture. Archaeological finds, including inscriptions, pottery, and coins, reveal the city’s role as a cultural and political crossroads.

• Archaeology
The site of Deir Ain Abata is known for the Byzantine monastic complex with a basilical church dedicated to St Lot, mentioned in the Bible, flanked by a large reservoir to the south and a refectory and pilgrim’s hotel to the north.

The complex had agricultural terraces irrigated by water channels from the reservoir. The principle of monastic self-sufficiency was met at the site and remains of plants and animal bones were studied by researchers.

Qasr al-Bint:
One of Petra’s best-preserved structures, Qasr al-Bint dates back to the 1st century BCE. Dedicated to Dushara, the Nabataean deity, its name means “Palace of the Daughter,” tied to a local legend about a princess and Petra’s ingenious water system. It’s one of the few free-standing buildings in Petra to survive centuries of earthquakes.

As the United Nations marks its 79th anniversary, diplomats and experts gathered in Amman to discuss the organization’s role in tackling global crises, with growing concerns about its ability to address today’s complex geopolitical challenges.

The ongoing Gaza crisis has highlighted the UN’s struggle to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Critics argue that the institution, founded in a different era, is struggling to meet modern demands. Charles Petrie, a former senior UN official, noted that the UN’s structure was designed for a bygone era and is ill-equipped for today’s fragmented, multipolar world. Regional powers like the EU, India, and the U.S. are increasingly acting independently, further complicating the UN’s ability to function as a global body.

In Gaza, delivering humanitarian aid has proven difficult, with political will from member states often hindering progress. Scott Anderson, the UN’s deputy humanitarian coordinator, pointed out that military operations and national interests are obstructing aid efforts, leaving the UN vulnerable to accusations of ineffectiveness.

While many acknowledged the UN’s foundational values remain essential, experts like Marwan Muasher of the Carnegie Endowment emphasized the need for reform. He criticized the UN’s power structure, specifically the Security Council, which he believes limits its ability to respond effectively to global crises.

As the world changes, so too must the UN, to ensure it can address the challenges of a new era and maintain its credibility as a force for global cooperation.
