A Q&A with and , co-authors of “Patina Modern”.

Chris Mitchell and Pilar Guzmán are design obsessives who both want the same thing: rooms that are spare yet warm, layered yet clean, current yet timeless. Rooms that never forget the real humans – with all their needs, hopes, emotions, aspirations, and even spills – who live in these spaces.

Over the course of six ever more ambitious home renovations, they’ve cracked the code on how to achieve this.

“Most design books are intended to feature a designer’s work on past projects – in part to solicit new ones. And these coffee table monographs can be really beautiful. But they don’t really teach – that’s not their mission.
In this way, they’re kind of like a cookbook that has gorgeous photos of food, but no recipes.

We wanted to include the recipes. So our approach was to feature some of our own projects, with beautiful photography, but also with the behind-the-scenes process stuff. In other chapters, we break down our formula for collecting, for choosing materials and palette, and for putting it all together.”

The Datejust ticking away happily on my wrist is just too fancy for mowing the yard. It’s a ref: 16220. This beauty flies somewhat under the radar with its engined turned stainless-steel bezel, though the jubilee bracelet catches an eye from time to time. Regardless, it has no place cutting grass.

Years ago, I’d put on a beat up Seiko skx009 while doing anything grungy or dirty. The issue is, after getting used to the precision of a Rolex, it's hard to go backwards.

It is a strange feeling to be without your beverage of choice, that drink that is somewhat part of your life, your weekend ritual or evening delight.

We all have it in some way, that cup of coffee or tea you have at the same time each day, that evening Martini at Dukes in London or that version you make at home once the kids are out the way.

For me it is the Negroni, after a hectic work week, lovingly poured, stirred and strained over that large cube of ice, the orange peel twisted just right and paired to perfection with garlic olives and salted almonds.

It is just pure delight, a joyous thing that pulls me back to a feeling of normality and ease.

Patrick Bateman didn't have many redeeming features, but his meticulous approach to tailoring and skincare were two of them.
