Vi indichiamo, oggi, l'articolo di Jean Claude Monod intitolato "Vers la guerre perpétuelle? Enjeux et limites de la critique schmittienne
du cosmopolitisme kantien", contenuto nel fascicolo: "La filosofia alla prova della guerra", a cura di Danielle Cohen-Levinas e Massimiliano Marianelli.

The article analyzes Carl Schmitt’s critique of Kantian cosmopolitanism, highlighting the tensions between the Schmittian vision of politics, centered on the friend/enemy distinction, and the Kantian ideal of perpetual peace based on cosmopolitanism. The Schmittian vision of war and peace, his critique of the League of Nations, and his ideas on political “Pluriversum” are discussed in the paper, highlighting the ethical and political implica- tions in a contemporary context. Also introduced is Habermas’ approach, which seeks a dialogue between an “updated” Kant and a “reconstructed” Schmitt, seeking a balance between the two thinkers. This analysis offers a deeper understanding of the political and ethical dynamics related to the concept of war and peace in the modern world.

In this essay, we propose to reread a few pages from "The Star of Redemption" by Franz Rosenzweig, taken from the first book of the third part, entitled "Fire or Eternal Life". Between the lines, we examine the thought of war that is implicit in these pages, by look- ing back at some of the motives that drive people to war and encourage them to sacrifice their lives. These motives are all forms of attachment that are likely to take precedence over the protection of life that binds the living together. Simone Weil’s thinking on war and peace is complex and presents several angles which, over time, have either been modified or expanded into new perspectives. Whatever the case, we believe that Weilian thought helps us to get to the roots of the violence that governs all wars. In this text, we intend to continue the thread of this thought throughout history. Our perspective is that of theology, and this view can lead us to discover in weilian thought an ethic based on the articulation of things that are true but not empirical. This path opened up in truth is closely linked to our understanding of the human being, who can build a new logic out of the illogic of love.

Il nostro consiglio di lettura per oggi è l'articolo di Laura Sanò dedicato a "Hannah Arendt e la parabola del guerriero nel mondo", raccolto nel volume "La filosofia alla prova della guerra", a cura di Danielle Cohen-Levinas e Massimiliano Marianelli.

Hannah Arendt, concerned with the role of action in relation to others and critical of the reduction of the practical sphere to mere productive action, addresses a society disillusioned with politics, where power has often become synonymous with domination. Her reflection is based on individual responsibility in defining the present and resisting historical forces. In contemporary times, especially during dramatic situations such as war, this responsibility translates into taking a critical stance and actively seeking conscious action. In summary, Arendt suggests that, despite historical dramas, each individual can play an important role in defining his or her own present and orienting the future through critical thinking, responsible action and active participation in the public sphere.

This paper, as the subtitle states, intends to analyse the first part of Hannah Arendt’s "The Life of the Mind" as the work in which it is possible to find, in its most articulated form, the connection between the notions of plurality, two-in-one and in-between or infra, in view of a correct conception of thinking. If thinking is a certain experience of plurality, then opposing and resisting evil, as the title states, recalls the activity of the two-in-one arising in and from the space constituted by the in-between. Resisting evil, in this sense, coincides with recognising that in-between which peculiarly and originally characterises the human condition.

Kant hypothesized, for “perpetual peace”, that all states should adopt republican consti- tutions (today, with good approximation, we would say democratic or even democratic-republican); Rawls embraces “wide thinking” and proposes an extension of the right of peoples to well-ordered societies that, as such, guarantee the minimum requirements of justice. This transition is made possible by the “reasonable”: Kant’s philosophical project and Rawls’ immense work on justice, even before sharing a contractual perspective, find their starting point in “reason”. More precisely, in “public reason”. The very task of po- litical philosophy, according to the American philosopher, is intense as “reconciliation”, and this concept, not only ideally, recalls Kant’s project “for perpetual peace”: a world free from the great evils of war and injustice.

War is always about «life and death», and survival for those who remain. In dialogue with the psychoanalyst René Major, this text does not limit itself to the mere «mienneté» of death. Death is always also, and perhaps first and foremost, the death of the other. Life and death, night and day, the possible and the impossible: all existence is nourished first and foremost by an experience of opposites. «To love someone is to say to them: “You, you won’t die”», says Gabriel Marcel. In wartime, even more than in peacetime, the possibility of death haunts families and loved ones. The «soldiers at the back», as Freud put it, suffer alongside the «soldiers at the front». No one is content to die anonymously, even in the face of violence or massacre. «Dying with you» means that we never die alone, taking with us all the traces of our lives joined and conjoined with other lives.

We’d like to put into perspective two philosophical ideas for which war is a neuralgic moment in the great march of History and universal Reason, which must be deconstructed in order to give life to the meaning of the human: Franz Rosenzweig and Emmanuel Levinas.
There is an imperialism of thought which, in Hegel’s legacy, justifies ideological discourses on war. Rosenzweig, and later Levinas, a reader of Rosenzweig, will each develop a critique of totality that will enable us to think beyond war.

Il momento storico che stiamo vivendo mostra, ogni giorno con maggiore chiarezza, che la guerra minaccia costantemente l’equilibrio delicato della vita in comune. Forze opposte cercano di prevalere l’una sull’altra attraverso l’esercizio della violenza, profanando lo spazio di libertà dell’altro e promuovendo un ordine stabilito a prescindere dalle differenti istanze in gioco. L’armonia, posta a obiettivo utopico della vita in comune e delle relazioni tra individui e tra popoli, è minacciata da nuovi conflitti. La tensione al predominio manifesta ancora, nell’attuale panorama storico, quel meccanismo che ha mosso per secoli una parte significativa della storia dell’umanità attraverso guerre, violenze e lotte per la supremazia. La stessa idea di giustizia e di bene viene costantemente minacciata dall’esercizio di un potere che può corrompere gli ideali più nobili piegandoli alle dinamiche di conflitto e prevaricazione fino a includerli nella cosiddetta “ragione di guerra”. Testimoni di quest’aporetica concezione, artisti, filosofi, teologi e politici hanno tentato di giustificare, di criticare o di decostruire i presupposti ideologici del polemos fondante il pensiero occidentale. Oggi più che mai è indispensabile una profonda interrogazione sul legame tra passato e presente e sulle narrazioni differenti (e talvolta antitetiche) che animano il nostro mondo, ciascuna con i propri legittimi desideri.

Il fascicolo dedicato a "La contingenza dell'incontro" si chiude con una conversazione tra Massimo Recalcati e Cristina Guarnieri.

In this interview, Cristina Guarnieri interrogates Massimo Recalcati, one of the best- known Italian psychoanalysts, on the question of the contingency of the encounter posed by Jacques Lacan in Seminar XX. The theme of contingency is interrogated through the various books that make up Recalcati’s intellectual research and modulated in its different dimensions: from the status of the subject in its path of sexuality to the impossible relationship and love as "a-mur", from the father-son relationship to the transfert relationship, from the artistic act to the gift of grace.

In this paper I examine three philosophical stories of “encounter”, in order to make the case that similar prejudices are involved in our experience of the mind of others. I start from the history of the encounter of the Europeans with the “savages” of the Americas, arguing that this provides an exemplary case of the kinds of misunderstandings that concern our encounter with other persons and the challenge of understanding their difference. Second, I examine the case of other minds in animals, arguing that contemporary investigations in ethology and philosophy of animal minds have confirmed the need to distinguish between the projection of our ideas of mind and self and the specific difference of other minds. Finally, I turn to self-knowledge, arguing that – contrary to common sense – our own actions and thoughts are yet another case of interpretation, as the “otherness” belongs to ourselves.

Iván Illich’s research on the theological origins of the idea of instrument in Hugo de San Víctor indicates the importance of contingency to understand the modern notion of system. This in turn depends, according to Erich Voegelin’s reading, on a secularized gnostic heritage. The theological presuppositions that produced the new understanding of contingency confirm in Illich’s thought a reaffirmation of creation, the word and the body in the form of a radical critique of the era of modern service systems and institutions. Illich’s notion of instrument criticizes modern technology. And that brings him closer to the approaches of Günther Anders and Alfred Sohn-Rethel. Likewise, the antignostic starting point for creation and the flesh clarifies the theological contents that still hold the notions of “birth” and “unavailability”.

The question of God addressed in Anselm of Aosta’s Proslogion has been in the long his- tory of the text’s reception hijacked by chapters II-IV presenting the well-known proof of God’s existence, then named the “ontological argument”. This contribution intends to consider the entirety of the text, emphasizing in particular the chapters XIV and XXV, which represent a real change of discourse with respect to the linearity of rational argumentation. The aim is a systematic interrogation of the interaction between rationality and affection within the framework of the Proslogion, showing how the cogency of rational argumentation is both challenged and fulfilled by the contingency of the encounter with the God-event, which must be felt and not merely thought. Indeed, the mystical openness of thought towards the inconceivable and unrepresentable divine reality is accompanied by the Anselmian demand for an experience of God that happens in the life of the bodies and in the fundamental affections of existence.

This article explores the contingency of the encounter between Jesus of Nazareth and Mary Magdalene that occurs at Jesus’s tomb. This article interprets two important passages from the Gospel of Mark (Mk 16, 1-8) and the Gospel of John (Jn 20, 11-18) to reflect more deeply on this encounter. In Mark’s Gospel, the result of the encounter is the reference to a never-derivable and unrepresentable beginning, on which the text of Mark is built. The Gospel of John, which refers to Mark, concretizes this as the beginning of love and the covenant partnership between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, which becomes representative for all those who encounter Jesus. It is a contingent encounter because there is no external necessity. We can never realistically expect to meet a dead person again in this world, but the encounter between Mary and the risen Jesus exemplifies a contingency that ends in the freedom of love.

Bill Viola’s video The Greeting is initially shown as an example that the lived duration of an encounter is not a question of length, but of depth and feeling. Surprise is the infallible sign of every true encounter. There is no season of encounters, all our lives we are exposed to their transforming power. Remembering does not so much mean reproducing what has already happened to us, but building with what remains of memories an unedited version of one’s own history. The world is not a collection of things, but of related events. For each of us, many of the most significant of these are encounters. Our life is a succession of encounters, many of them realised, others failed. Everyone becomes himself in relation to others and determined by a set of relationships. Whoever accepts to come to terms with democracy, a very difficult reality made up of other individuals each with their own needs and desires, often different and colliding with ours, will be continually called to that examination of reality to which, after Freud, we should all subject ourselves.

The event of the encounter poses a structural challenge to philosophy. If philosophy is transcendental, as it is by tradition and perhaps vocation, the possibility of the encounter is reduced to the encounter with what the transcendental will have anticipated. Hence the idea of questioning the hypothesis of another philosophy of the tyche, investigating that haptic dimension which alone seems to be able to bypass the reduction of the encounter to the anticipable without operating an analogous reduction of the encounter to the unanticipable. The main interlocutors of this hypothesis are Roland Barthes and his study of the amorous discourse, Jacques Lacan and his idea of the objet petit a, and a youthful, openly orphic Aristotle, rarely questioned as a philosopher of the strange knot that binds tyche and thigein, touch and fortune.
