There is no single Anthropocene masterpiece; in fact, there are many – and their values are part of the mastery they embed. In this short text, philosophical and literal pieces address certain dimensions of Anthropocene masterpieces. Some provocative theoretical roots, already in early times, reflected on some of the basic ideas of the environmental constitution of which human beings are a part. These textual fragments suggest five types of knowledge (factual, transcalar, environmental, explorative, material), with which five architectural masteries, described through projects, are juxtaposed.

Masterpieces are a function of value: the ways in which it is assigned, exchanged, and agreed upon. In architecture, irrespective of the source that generates it, value is inherently dependent on pictures –their production and distribution– for it is pictures that funnel the discipline’s attention, shape its body of knowledge, and set the ingredients of debate, making visible the buildings and projects that ultimately weave an audience large enough to concur on the status of a masterpiece. As the currency of attention, the distribution and scope of pictures depends for its part on media, a key factor of the image economy that determines the allocation of value in each moment in history.

We could have written about some impeccable projects of the Portuguese school, dear to us for biographical reasons and academic training; we could have looked at the excellence of Central European architecture; we could have written about some author’s gems, in some moving corners of the Mediterranean landscape. We have preferred to dedicate ourselves to an ordinary architecture made in China, whose richness consists precisely in its condition which is by no means exceptional. We consider it a significant stage within the respectable architectural research of the Urbanus studio, a sort of continuation of the successful design strategy started with the OCT (Oversea Chinese Town) in the Nanshan district.

Iscrizione: gratuita
Premio: 10.000 euro al primo classificato + due menzioni
Deadline: 18 febbraio 2022

The Evolutionary Masterpiece: The Design Space

The hypothesis here is that true masterpieces are not the design of a mastermind but the capacity of a work to articulate the set of constraints acting at a given time and in a given environment. The intelligence of such work does not rely on an “individual” design, but on an evolutionary process in which the masterpiece is a synthesis of such constraints, that turns them into a new species which can continue to evolve.
