Pourtant moi-même, j’ai du mal à le savoir, Je sais que si je ne vous dis pas qui je suis Assurément seul vous ne pouvez pas le voir, Malheureusement même si je vous le dis C’est évident que vous ne pourrez pas le croire ... Je suis un énorme arbre au milieu d’un désert Et une immense flamme au milieu de la mer ,Je suis bon et très mauvais bonheur et misère, Je suis simple et très complexe, honneu

r et mystère, Je suis très calme comme une mélodie suave Et très agité comme une maladie grave Au large de la côte, je suis une épave Que de temps en temps les vagues de la vie lavent, Je suis un esclave et ceci mon propre esclave, Esclave de mes erreurs qui toujours m’entravent ,Je suis parent et ceci mon propre parent Car pour moi j’ai œuvré toute ma vie durant, Je suis un enfant et ceci mon propre enfant, Car seul à mes ordres je suis obéissant, J’ai cent reflets, certains sont vifs et d’autre sombres, Ou plutôt sans reflet, suis-je un homme sans ombre, Je suis le compréhensif incompréhensible Comme l’air, je suis extensible et compressible, Je suis l’air de ce chant, les vers de ce poème, Certains me détestent tant pourtant d’autres m’aiment Des temps ont passé et je suis toujours le même, J’étais, je suis et resterai toujours moi-même.
