Anybody else missing Bit Brigade shows? I cannot grant you the wish of being surrounded by sweaty dudes screaming about Metroid, but I CAN share a conversation with 2/5 of the band (listen here: http://smarturl.it/inweirdcities) AND show you these pictures of Noah's gaming nook and his in-home Studio PenPen art studio!

Everybody who listens to this episode tells me that they want to hang out with these guys, and I can attest that Noah, Luke, Jace, Mike, Bryant, Ryan, and Joel (who is on the show but not in Bit Brigade) are the best house guests. I hope you'll listen and love them, too, and I hope they'll get sleepover offers to carry them through their next tour, whenever that may be.

Oh hey, it's Luke Douglas Fields — my Athens, Georgia chauffeur and one of the guests from today's new episode! ⁣

It's a super-fun blast from the pre-pandemic past with Bit Brigade gamer and Studio PenPen artist Noah McCarthy PLUS Luke who plays in Bit Brigade + We Versus the Shark + Double Ferrari PLUS Joel August Hatstat from Cinemechanica and Pegasuses-XL.

On this sweet little snack of show, we're talking about what makes Athens so artist-friendly, classic NES games, and creating a life around the things you love.⁣ 🖤

⁣If you need some inspiration right now, you've got to hear this conversation with Linqua Franqa (a.k.a. County Commissioner Mariah Parker, a UGA PhD candidate) and Squalle (a.k.a. Torrance Wilcher, an engineer and step coach), recorded in Athens, GA with Joel August Hatstat of Joel Hatstat - High Jump Media in May 2019: http://smarturl.it/inweirdcities/

Using music as a platform for positive change has been an Athens tradition since the early days of R.E.M. and these two rappers/community leaders are talking about about genre-spanning solidarity, the power of hip hop in the classroom, and the life-affirming force of a middle school step team.

For more about the work Mariah is doing, subscribe to the new podcast she co-hosts, Waiting On Reparations.

Friends, I'm taking the week off to celebrate Black voices, listen, learn, grieve, donate, and study social justice with my children.

I'll be back with a new episode on Tuesday.

Last spring, I sat down with Bill Berry of R.E.M. and talked about his life, his country house outside of Athens, Georgia, his favorite chef, and how his musical career began, way back in the 3rd grade.⁣

Bill is the best. He is warm and kind, and he's a guru when it comes to staying safe at home.

If you know an R.E.M. fan, you might want to pass this along and brighten their day!

P.S. Big thanks to Mike Albanese for setting up and recording the interview, Joel August Hatstat for editing the episode, and Jeff Rosenstock for letting me use “You, In Weird Cities” as the theme song!⁣ ⁣
